Retiring? Your Aussie Isn’t

“We are retiring soon, and having a dog really won’t fit in with our new lifestyle now. We’ll be traveling quite a bit, moving to a different state…so if we don’t find a new home for Maggie we have decided … Continue reading

New Aussies Coming This Week

We have just gotten a whole new group of Aussies as our last group seems to have found their forever homes. Some will need some time to recover and get better. Some are just pups and need some lessons, and others are seasoned adults that just need a family that will love them as much as they will in turn love the family that gives them a chance.

Meet Charlie Border Collie Needs A Home ADOPTED

Private Referral Charlie

Private Referral Charlie

My name is Charlie. I’m a typical, fun-loving one year old border collie. I love to play frisbee and am really great at catching and playing ball, too. I might even be good at agility and /or herding… I am up to date on my shots and am currently on preventative heartworm pills. I’m a skinny kid, but I like to eat!  I still have some work to do on my training, but I have a good start.  I can walk well on a leash, and can sit and lay down (with a treat is nice). Although I love to run and play, I can cuddle and lay next to you on the couch or floor.  I am housebroken and very loving when I can be next to you.  Other dogs are ok, but it takes me a bit to get used to them and I don’t mind cats either. My Mom was 76 yrs old and started having trouble with her eyes and can’t keep me anymore, but wants me to be with another great family.

Black Tri Australian Shepherd Quinn (NS 0308) ADOPTED

Quinn (NS 0308)

Quinn (NS 0308)

Quinn is a 3 year old black tri male who is on the larger side, he currently weighs around 52 pounds, and needs to gain yet a few more to be at his proper weight. Quinn was a stray found in Kentucky, so he has a slight drawl to his bark, but it’s a gentlemanly bark.

Quinn is learning the clicker and when we got him, he was not house broken, but he is catching on fast and will be all learned by the time he gets his forever home.

Quinn (NS 0308)

Quinn (NS 0308)

Quinn gets along with other dogs, he is a shadow to his foster mom, and seems to not demand toys or treats as all his only. He does have a passion for a fresh bone, and has argued with the girls over it.

Quinn has one habit we are correcting, he pinches with his front teeth, or nibbles. Be is pretty much a 50+ pound puppy right now but should settle in nicely. He seems to tolerate cats, walks on a leash, and rides well in a car.

To adopt Quinn please complete an application at New Spirit App Reference NS 0308

UPDATE Day 10-11: Missing Aussie in Rock Cut State Park Rockford IL

Rio Still Missing

Rio Still Missing

Update Day 10-11: It looks like Rio is moving further south from the park he was originally lost in. He is now in neighborhoods, seen ocassionaly laying and relaxing. We seem to need people in the area to call sooner then later. If you see this black and white Aussie, with a leash still attached, please call the Winnebago Animal Control first (815) 877-3073 then the family second, (815) 670-9962 ask for Hal. We are finding 1-2 hour delays on sighting then reporting. It will help increase his chances if called ASAP. Also please don’t chase him, this will cause him to run and change locations, we want him to feel relaxed and secure and allow a quicker capture. I will be obtaining a report of his path tonight, and will be posting this. Keep saying your prayers for Rio, ask your 4 leggers to say their doggy prayers, and all paws crossed for his safe and quick return.

UPDATE Day 8-9: Sadly the efforts of his foster mom didn’t work out as he wasn’t spotted on Saturday. With the weather turning rainy, he has not been spotted as much, what spotting was seen was further south of the Rock Cut State Park. One call was at 7:30 AM near Riverside Blvd in the Rock Cut State Park area, which is further south. This is also near a busier highway, and about a mile further south of the subdivision he was seen last week.

A note, if you are call to report him, if you could call the instant he is seen, this would help Animal Control and the family. Many calls are 1-2 hours after the spotting or sighting, he can have moved a mile or more in that time frame.

The family is still actively looking and could use help in keeping an eye out for him. Any spottings should be immediately reported to the Winnebago Animal Control office (815) 877-3073 before calling the family, and then please notify the family of his spotting (815) 670-9962 ask for Hal.

UPDATE Day 7: Still more sightings of Rio. He has been seen running in some neighborhoods surrounding the Rock Cut State Park. I spoke to his family this morning, he was seen “walking” in a field near a subdivision. We are hoping he is running low on steam and ready to snuggle up to a family and let him come home. The live trap did catch someone, but it was a raccoon. So maybe Rio was upset that he couldn’t get his mean. Today his foster mom is going out to the park, Rio was with Tammy for some time and we are hoping his recall of her is still strong, and he will remember her and come to her. Cross your paws and ask that Rio comes home.

UPDATE Day 6: More sightings of Rio, he is still alive and still being a rather bad boy by running all the time, he was seen back inside Rock Cut State Park. They are going to place a live trap to try and catch him, if you live in the Rock Cut State Park area, please let people know not to scare or mess with the live trapping. We had been told he was caught once, only to be released by a child with good intentions. We are also told a tracking group may try and see what can be done.

So please cross your paws, say your best doggy prayers, and we will take a few cat prayers, and ask that Rio comes home, he has been almost gone a week, he has had his vacation and time to come home.

UPDATE Day 5: Rio has been spotted many times, inside Rock Cut State Park and in the surrounding neighborhoods. Wednesday he was spotted in a subdivision south of Rock Cut State Park. The family has flyers out. A Neighborhood Watch program with 50+ people is also on the lookout. Hope is he will be caught Thursday. If anyone has connections with the DNR at Rock Cut State Park, please contact me as we need to set a live trap if he is still roaming free.

UPDATE Day 4: Rio has been spotted numerous times near the Rock Cut State Park, in Winnebago County IL. He was reported to have been caught once, tied to a picnic table, but then released by a passing child thinking he was going to hang around the table. We also have had reports of his wandering just outside of the park into a subdivision near Harlem and Yorkshire Drive. He also was left some food, which he was observed eating, by his owner, but was too quick. He runs like the wind. If anyone has some advice on catching a hi-flying, hi-energy Aussie, who is semi-shy, please contact us and advise away. Rio needs to come home.

Sad But I Was Asked To

I was asked to remove all reference to Aussie Rescue Placement Helpline (ARPH) yesterday. This was any dogs for adoption or that were adopted.

So I guess if you are looking for an Aussie, do a search for other rescues in IL besides our site. We will keep listing those great Protege Aussies. We also are looking for volunteers and foster homes in Wisconsin and Indiana. So if you are in those areas, contact us, we would be happy to help get you rolling.

Badin Blue Merle Male (NS 0584) ADOPTED

Badin Blue Merle Australian Shepherd (NS 0584)

Badin Blue Merle Australian Shepherd (NS 0584)

Look at me!  I am the most handsome one of them all…….  I should know, my foster family says so!

Meet Badin (aka Boomer).  A 4 year old, 60 pound blue merle male in need of a caring home. Badin (aka Boomer) is a wonderful, very low key guy but he LOVES attention.  He follows his foster family around everywhere so his middle name should be velcro but he is never in the way. If he could fit in your pocket that’s where he’d want to be.

Badin (aka Boomer) willingly shares his foster home with 3 other pets;  2 Aussies and 1 cat not to mention his foster mom, dad and 7 year old brother.

Badin Blue Merle Australian Shepherd (NS 0584)

Badin Blue Merle Australian Shepherd (NS 0584)

Badin (aka Boomer) rarely barks and displays no aggression towards men, women, children of any age or other animals.  He is just plain awesome.

Badin (aka Boomer) knows sit, stay, take it (for food and treats) and come which he does eagerly without treats!!  He walks great on a leash and does wonderfully in a car.  He also will go into his crate but we don’t think he really needs it.

The only issue for Badin (aka Boomer), is he is Thunderphobic, which tends to be a common trait in Aussies.

He’s just a general pleaser and a great catch for any family situation.

Badin (aka Boomer) is being fostered in Chicagoland. Complete an application at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue today. Reference NS 0584

Love at first sight

Stryder

Stryder

Stephanie and her very new husband decided that they wanted to start their family with a four-legged child instead of a two-legged one. Her husband wanted an Australian Shepherd, and they both felt that rescue was the way to go. Stephanie found an online website, and then saw a picture of a beautiful blue merle boy on a Facebook link…and what can we say? It was love at first sight. Stephanie and her husband soon made the 2 hour drive to Mundelein, IL to meet Stryder.

We asked Stephanie how Stryder is doing after having joined their family a few months ago. Like any proud mom she said “he is fabulous—very sweet, loving and he has even learned a few new tricks. He has gained 15 lbs, which he really needed to gain, and he even has learned how to play with toys! Every day he does something new, he is really a wonderful first dog.”

Stephanie said everyone at the rescue was so nice and friendly (what else could she say?) and hopes to soon get more involved with the group. “I love to look on Facebook and see all the dogs who have found new homes–it is a wonderful thing your group does for these dogs, thank you!”

No Stephanie, the thanks goes to you and your husband for opening up your hearts and your home to Stryder. We know that adopting a rescue dog isn’t always easy, but it is people like you that make our efforts a success.
