We Are Being Flooded
I arrived at work Monday only to discover we are over flowing with emergency rescues all over the State of Illinois, Indiana and Missouri.
We have 3 Australian Shepherds at the Effingham Animal Control in Effingham Illinois that need rescued. Colleen, one of our Central Illinois volunteers is traveling there today to see what the status is and knowing how we are will be traveling back home with 3 Aussies all in need of rescue.
We have 1 beautiful red merle female pup that is in Franklin County Indiana that is on the PTS list and is shy or afraid of people, she was a stray and we are hoping it entails shelter shock, which so many Aussies seem to acquire in shelters.
Then down in Joplin Missouri we have these 2 mini Aussies that are in dire straits and we are hoping are headed to New Spirit this weekend. They were surrendered to the shelter and are said to be good boys and girls.
We are finally getting Beere up from Texas this week as well. So anyone that has thought about fostering or adopting, now is the time to contact us for an application at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue.

ADOPTED: Chuman (Storm) Blue Merle Australian Shepherd Male Illinois NS 0576
At just over 20lbs, Chuman (Storm) is either a larger mini aussie or an aussie mix. Chuman (Storm) has a beautiful blue merle coat, which will require attention to keep that handsome look he so deserves.
He loves walks, riding in the car, writhing on the bed and playing. He is house trained and crates voluntarily at night.
Sounds perfect, right? Unfortunately, Chuman (Storm) came to us fearful of people. Time and patience has made him learn to trust people one at a time. He is still leery of strangers and will not let anyone he doesn’t know touch him. He would be perfect in a home with another dog to help him feel confident and where there aren’t a lot of new people coming and going. For this reason, we don’t recommend him for a house with children. For the right people with a little patience, Chuman (Storm) will be a wonderful companion and playmate.
To learn more about Chuman please complete an application at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue. Reference NS 0576
ADOPTED: Gambit (Protege #0166) 15 month old blue merle male mini Aussie
Gambit is making fantastic progress in socializing with men! On Sunday he went to both Petco and Petsmart where he approached several men on his own, and did very well, no submissive urination, no fear barking at all. He was very excited to be out and about meeting people.
At home it took about 2 and a half weeks to get comfortable with my fiance putting his leash on, and now he very rarely has any submissive urination when Rick reaches for his collar. Otherwise he has no fear of Rick, in fact he loves to lay on the couch with him and cuddle.
Gambit went to flyball practice with me Monday night, and went right up to two different men he had not met before for treats. No submissive urination, no fear barking at all, and he seemed to enjoy the attention after the initial nervous moment. He enjoyed meeting everyone else as well. As I suspected, with love and trust Gambit is becoming a much more confident dog, and we are seeing the fear lessening day by day. He now seems to understand that he is safe here and that he does not need to fear when someone is reaching for his collar. I am now confident that with gentle hands and time to trust he can adjust to a home with men in it.
Here are a couple of videos of Gambit at day care:
Gambit is current on all shots and is neutered and one flea & tick and heartworm preventatives. If you might be interested in learning more about Gambit, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Meet Spike Lee in Person – NS 0728 Spike Lee
Meet the famous Spike Lee in person, if you are wanting to meet the 4 legged, furry, fluffy Australian Shepherd Spike Lee that is.
Spike is coming to our rescue this week as a surrender because of a unplanned move and the owner not sure of what Spike’s past is all about. Which brings up a great point. Without having raised these dogs personally, no one can know the past or what these Aussies have been threw or endured. A human would probably come out destroyed with some of the events these great dogs have experienced. Being shot, hit by cars and left for dead. Attacked horribly by other dogs, beaten or starved to the point of death, left with no medical treatments and then catching one of the most debilitating diseases. Dumped on the side of the road because they felt it was more humane then a shelter, only to be hit by a car or worse. Left at a shelter thinking they are so beautiful that someone will adopt them, which is not the case, Aussies are not kennel type dogs, they need human contact and will break down and start to have issues with behavior.
Yet after all this, they once in rescue are some of the most loving, forgiving, dedicated dogs you could find. So Spikes’s past, is in the past. His future is now and will be great for the right family.

Oakley ~ Adopted! August 2010
Stella ~ Adopted! August 2010
Fergus and Raine
Fergus and Raine (Petraits attached) are extremely gentle brother / sister, one-year-old, 35-pound, crystal blue-eyed, white Australian Shepherds looking for loving homes.

Fergus and Raine
While these two adore each other and would love to live together, they would also do well together or separated in homes with other dogs with whom they can model their behavior after. They are very shy, playful, wiggly, loving, snugly and docile. They love to play with their toys, and also enjoy being mellow lap dogs.
Since these dogs were born deaf, here’s a web site to learn more about how to train deaf dogs: http://www.deafdogs.org/training/
They can learn to follow hand signals, and rely on their sight and smell more heavily.
Fergus and Raine are crate-trained, housebroken, and great with other dogs. Prior to coming to Project Rescue Chicago, these country bumpkins had never been on leash before, so they are very tentative and resistant but learning. They are very quiet in the home, and would love a fenced-in yard to run and play. They are healthy, spayed/neutered, de-wormed, up-to-date on vaccines, micro-chipped, heartworm-tested and on preventative.
To meet and possibly adopt Raine and/or Fergus please complete an adoption application at http://www.projectrescuechicago.org/adoption-application/
You can follow up on your application and ask additional questions by contacting info@projectrescuechicago.org or 312-623-0939. Their adoption fee of $200 each or $350 as a pair benefits the dogs of PRC.

Bark in the Park Ottawa IL

Bark in the Park, CUPCAKES!
Well we had our booth at the Ottawa Bark in the Park, and it was a huge success. Stephanie Z must have baked over 200 cupcakes as she was able to generate $180.00 in just cupcake sales. She also made some homemade doggie treats. I want all our Aussies to give Steph the honoray Aussie butt Wiggle! Also a big thanks to Stephanies husband for bringing tables and a tent to shade us from the sun. Also for having Stryder show his great Aussie friendliness.
Also Sherry Mc brought homemade doggie treats (I tried one, it was a little bland, but good) and her family to help out as well manning the booth. Sherry brought Toby and Holland as well to show how great of kissers they were!

Shayla Update: Our Special Rescue Girl – A Real Rescue

Shayla Considers All the Attention
Shayla is doing remarkably better. The doctor stated in around 8 weeks the pins could come out of her leg and allow her to not live with the possibility of later infections. She will be getting all her vaccinations this week before being released and allowed to head to her first foster home. There she will stay until she is ready to head to her second foster home for her physical therapy. It will be sometime before this special girl is ready for adoption.
When Hal went to visit it her the day after surgery they doctor said she wouldn’t eat, but when Hal arrived, he snuck in some special don’t give food (just like us 2 leggers do for friends in the hospital) and she ate it right up and was excited and happy to see Hal. Hal was one of the rescue drivers that brought her into the vet’s office.
Yesterday when Hal visited her she was in very high spirits, even placing mild pressure on her leg. We expect a excellent recovery for our special Iowa girl named Shayla.

They think it was a .22 caliber. The shot shattered her leg. The surgery was performed yesterday and she is expected to make a 100% recovery, and will have complete use of her leg.
The amazing thing about Shayla is she never once cried, showed any fear or aggression towards those helping her, and has been what we call the perfect dog. She is staying at the vets office for a few days and then on her way to a foster home for recovery.

While not quite ready for people to meet her, she is still asking for donations to offset the costs to save her. I would also like to thank Emily, Rose, Hal, Beth Anne and Joyce for helping New Spirit save this girl and give her a second chance with a family that will want her forever
Shayla’s Story and Her Great Adventure

Shayla Being Taken To First Vet
UPDATE: Looks like she was shot and not hit by a car.
Shayla looks to be a 1 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd. She is your typical Aussie, no tail, small and seems to enjoy the company of people.
Over the course of the last 4 days she was spotted running along the side roads, would dodge any on-coming cars and instead take cover in the drainage ditches as cars approached. She was seen running and doing well, she has no collar nor any tags or chips to identify her with.
Monday Morning a call went out to the various rescue organizations in Iowa, Illinois and Indiana as well as Missouri for help to rescue this girl, actually a desperate plea as she was hit by a car, then after that she made her way to a farm house for help or at least food and shelter. She stumbled upon the territory of 2 other dogs, 2 dogs that were guarding their home and property. They proceeded to violently attack her, no fault of their own, they were doing their job.

Shayla On Her Way To Rockford
The attack was broken up, she was placed in a garage and it was noticed that she was badly injured, with no ID, no owner to call, no animal control to have come and take her, she was left alone, to await her fate. This is when Joyce Young sent out the alert for an Urgent Emergency Rescue.

Shayla Being Very Good
Our group, New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue was one of the first groups to respond, and after assessing the fact she was an Aussie, we decided she needed to be saved, and fast, from 8 AM to almost 11 AM with the help of the Minnesota Rep of New Spirit, she made call after call helping coordinate transport, she her self was on her way back from an agility event in Colorado, we worked and called and pleaded for drivers, we wanted to save her back leg from possible amputation.

Shayla Finally Eating After It All
So far this little girl has traveled from Schaler Iowa all the way to Rockford Illinois by 9 PM Monday night. What a great network of people and help this girl has gotten. Today she will see the vet, and we expect surgery and the saving of her leg.

Help Shayla With Your Prayers
We will keep everyone updated as to where she stands later today. Our PAWS are crossed here.
And again, any help in well wishes or donations is much appreciated
