ADOPTED: NS 0834 Cocoa 12 Week Old Red Merle Australian Shepherd Male Minnesota

Cocoa is a 4 month old purebred Australian Shepherd Male. He is the result of a double merle breeding which has left him deaf and mostly blind. But dont let that deter you from adopting him! Cocoa doesnt know that he’s different and he plays and gets on just as well, if not better, than other pups his age! Cocoa loves to play with the resident dogs and is great with the cat. He relies on sound vibrations and shadows and follows his foster mom around the house just fine. He is a bit of a fireball and will not be suited for a couch potato home!

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cocoa1.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cocoa1.jpeg"]NS 0834 Cocoa[/frame_center]

He loves to romp and run and play! If he cant find you, he will bark so you can locate him. He is learning touch signals (ie: double tap between shoulder blades means ‘lay down’) He seems to be housebroken and does very well in his crate. Cocoa loves stuffed toys and can be kept busy with a stuffed shin bone or Nylabone. He is still in the puppy chewing stages so he will need to be supervised until he’s older! He is also a bit mouthy still.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cocoa11-400x266.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/cocoa11.jpeg"]NS 0834 Cocoa[/frame_center]

We recommend a fenced yard for Cocoa so that he can be kept safe when outside. You wont be able to call him back and he may not see you even if he’s looking in your direction. If kept exercised, Cocoa is a great in the house. He will nap with you and sleep with you. He weighs about 20lbs as of mid January. He’s a red merle and it looks like he’s wearing muddy pants!

NS 0631 Bono 1 Year Old Black Tri Australian Shepherd Needs Both Hips Replaced Illinois

Meet Bono, our always happy black tri, who it turns out was born without actual hips, on both back legs, which would require a double hip replacement surgery. Enter stage left, Dr. Forsythe from Brookside Veterinary Clinic who was more then happy to provide the needed surgeries to give Bono a normal life.

NS 0631 Bono Tries To Relax

    Days 1-3

Bono had his first hip replacement surgery on December 20th.  The ride home from the vet’s office, which should have taken 2 1/2 hours, took more than 4.  His constant whining and yelps of pain forced Mom to make several stops to sit and comfort him.  He couldn’t get up on his own, can only stand or walk with the support of a towel under his midsection and has to be carried outside so he can take care go to the bathrrom.  Despite taking two types of pain medications, any movement at all causes excruciating pain.

    Day 4

He does not seem to be in as much pain as the first three days.  He can get up, stand and walk short distances on his own.  He still has to be supported by a towel when walking as his walk resembles that of a drunken sailor.  He has to be carried outside to avoid the stairs.  His appetite has returned as has his love for the recliner and chasing the cats (which will have to be shelved until he is better healed).  From this point forward he will spend the majority of the next 4 weeks in a crate so he does not injure himself.

So help this young man out with some of your coffee money, your secret chocolate fund or even that piggy bank. Bono needs over $1000.00 in medical costs to be covered, and as with any rescue, funds are limited.

NS 0840 Mr Burns 10 Year Old Blue Merle Australian Shepherd In Need Wisconsin

Meet Mr. Burns, he is 1 10 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd, who was probably a puppy mill stud, who is now too old to matter and too damaged (according to the puppy mill) to be of any use to them. You see Mr. Burns was turned in for health reason to a shelter, health reasons that will cost money, and shelters can’t afford to spend money on such niceties as surgeries, they have too many dogs thrown away every day to care for. Mr. Burns was set for euthanization 2 times and each time was spared by the grace and kindness of a shelter manager who was willing to take him into their shelter to buy him 10 more days of life, hoping and praying that someone somewhere would see the value in Mr. Burns, and take him into rescue and attend to his needs. We saw him, and we saw his potential, dirty, matted and stained coat and all, he was of great value to us, we knew he would be a great Australian Shepherd, a credit to his breed.

Br. Burns needs a few items attended to, one is a very damaged pride and ego, one that was deflated and taken so low, that many that met him felt he was the saddest and probably should be let go and pass to the bridge, we say HECK NO! He has many fine years left in him, his sadness is already going away, and he is displaying the usual Aussie butt wiggles and the happy dance that so many Aussies will do.

Mr. Burns needs to have an eye that has gone bad removed, and if there is enough there, even a possible prosaic replacement, he also has teeth worn down to the numb, from being left in a crate all the time and from lots of boredom, you see puppy mill dogs don’t get toys, or attention, just produce puppies so we can buy them from the pet shops, aren’t they even cuter now that you know mom and dad are treated like some un-cared for machine?

Sam is on the active side and will really need a family that fits his active lifestyle. We are working on agility and possibly some flyball lessons for him. Sam came in as a bit timid and scared of other dogs, but since he has been with his foster mom, he has blossomed into a love everyone Aussie. NS 0836 Timothy (Tango) Heads East

Remember our service dog Timothy? He is the one that was told to retire, and then told he would be put down because he went deaf and couldn’t do his job? Well Amy saved him and we held on to him long enough to find a foster spot out on the East Coast, at a home that actually helps save seals! So Timothy will be in good hands and will have a good chance for adoption when he doesn’t have to compete with our puppies.

TRANSFERED: NS 0836 Timothy Blue Merle Aussie Mix Service Dog for the Deaf Available

Timothy was transfered to the East Coast as we felt his options were better out where people are not so blessed with lots of dumped or surrendered Aussies. His chance for adoption will be so much better and he deserves his shot at a new home.

Meet Timothy, a 12 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd Mix. Timothy was a service dog for the deaf, for almost ten years and gave his whole life to his human. He would let her know when someone was at the door, if the alarm clock was ringing, or if the phone needed to be answered. He even assisted her to cross the street. You see Timothy was a very dedicated dog to assisting and knowing what his job was.

    [frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/102_1423_0026-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/102_1423_0026.jpg"]NS 0836 Timothy[/frame_center]

Fast forward to today, Timothy has gone deaf, he was no longer able to do his job, and so the service dog organization felt it was time for him to head to the bridge, but his human would not have it, he deserved to have a few years of retirement left. So now Timothy is now with New Spirit and we are looking for a home that will let Timothy do a little work, he is extremely smart, walks well on a leash, wants to be near you at all times, and rides well in a car.

    [frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/102_1424_0025-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/102_1424_0025.jpg"]NS 0836 Timothy[/frame_center]

Since he was a service dog, he really was never socialized with other dogs, so he would be best in a home without another dog, he is timid with strangers, but will open up. Timothy just needs some time to adjust to retirement. So if you feel you are someone that wants to offer this senior retired gentleman a small job and a warm bed, we want to talk.

ADOPTED: Scooby (Protege #0177) Red Merle Australian Shepherd Male Iowa

Introducing Scooby (Protege #0177)! Scooby is a 3 year old red merle male Aussie! He has recently been neutered, is up to date on all vaccinations, has been heartworm tested and is on preventatives. He is small in height, but has a few extra pounds that he could stand to lose. He currently weighs in at 34 pounds, but would probably be best at 30 pounds.

Scooby is very affectionate and super cute, and he is definitely a velcro Aussie who wants nothing more in life than to be right where his people are. He gets along well with all other dogs, and is currently being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Camp Bow Wow where he interacts with staff and up to 14 other dogs on a daily basis.

Scooby has done well with everyone he meets. He is a bit nervous upon first meeting, but is quite quick to warm up to new people after introductions. He shows interest in cats, and will follow them around if the cats are playing, but Scooby has been respectful of them.

Scooby was originally raised in a Spanish-speaking household. We have been working on learning what Scooby’s commands were in Spanish, and we are slowly trying to help him to associate them with the matching English commands. He is very eager to please, and if he understands what you are asking for he responds very well.

Scooby is completely housetrained, and has not had any accidents in the house or in his kennel at camp. He initially fusses, but quiets quickly when you leave the area, or when you tell him to be quiet.

The shelter staff reported that when Scooby was dropped off at the shelter there was a toddler with them, who was hugging and kissing Scooby, and Scooby was very tolerant of this. We have not yet tested him with small children, but based on this account I would think that he will probably do fine with kids.

If you are looking for a cute, smaller-sized Aussie who has a big heart to love his new family, Scooby would love to become a forever part of your family!
