Meet Milo, a 6 month old red merle Australian Shepherd, with stunning blue eyes and will probably grow to be around 45-50 pounds. Milo is your typical puppy, full of energy and curiosity.

Milo gets along great with other dogs, in fact he is in a home with 3-4 other foster brothers. Milo is learning the leash and what it means to ride in the car. He is a good greeter and is a quick learner.

Since Milo is a pup at heart and age, he is in that chewing and getting into mischief phase and will need a home that understands the needs and energy of a puppy. But once Milo is past all that and has taken his obedience classes and worn out, he will be your typical, velcro Aussie.

Rally (#0191) is a beautiful blue merle Mini-Aussie, with one blue and one brown eye. He is about 7 months old, is neutered, and is up to date on all shots. He is a bit chubby at 16 pounds and needs to lose a few pounds to get to his ideal weight.
Rally is a little shy when meeting someone new, but give him a treat and you’ve got a friend for life. He gets along great with other dogs and is fine with cats. He is a little timid around children.

Rally is housebroken and we are working on basic training. He knows how to sit, lie down, spin and shake! He does wonderfully on car rides, mostly just lays down in the seat next to you. He is just a very easy-going dog. He loves to go on walks and will follow you anywhere. Well, except to the bathroom: since he got a bath, he is a little timid of it. But is starting to venture in.
Rally is a very sweet and loving dog. He loves attention and cuddling. Here is a little video of Rally showing off his sociable cuteness:
His favorite toys are balls and nylon bones. Rally would be a great addition to your home. He is being fostered in Coralville.

Meet Scrapper, a 1 year old red merle male Australian Shepherd, who weighs around 40 pounds. Scrapper is one of those lower keyed Aussies, who loves to cuddle, loves to sleep at night right next to his human foster sister, who is thrilled that she has a buddy that likes to cuddle.

Cassie is a very sweet and loving 1-2 year old lethal white female mini Australian Shepherd. Fortunately, neither her hearing nor vision has been affected by this, however (although given her age and puppy characteristics there are definitely days she’d argue otherwise
As her foster mom, I’d label is as more “selective” hearing.). Cassie only weighs about 20lbs. She has littered one set of puppies recently and is consequently not yet spayed, but will be prior to adoption.

She’s a busy girl, who loves toys, bones, playing with other dogs, and chasing the squirrels outside, and the cat inside. She’s a very quick learner and does all she can to please you. You don’t need to teach her things twice, and she is definitely remorseful when she forgets. She’s learning the command “sit,” and is house and kennel-trained. She’s definitely a lover too and soaks up any and all attention you’ll give her. She plays well with children and will make her new family quite happy. Cassie is fostering in Minneapolis, MN.

If you are looking for one of the most loving puppies in the midewest, then meet our Prissy! The first thing Miss Prissy does when she wakes up is jump on her people’s laps, cuddle, kiss and love them – and then of course goes about her business. Being only 13 weeks old and 8 pounds, she is already a little velcro girl who prefers to be near her people when she plays and takes naps. This is very smart of Prissy as she is also a “lethal white” mini-Aussie and non-hearing.

Prissy likes to be in her crate/kennel when she eats and when she sleeps at night, and sometimes just for fun throughout the day. She has started potty training, and even does most of her business outside. She is such a joyful and healthy puppy! Her favorite thing in the world is to simply be held, kiss, and cuddle! When she is happy to see you, her whole bottom wiggles super fast! Prissy is a beautiful little puppy, all white with some faint blue merling on her butt. Prissy loves other dogs and cats, but prefers to be with humans to snuggle. Prissy is fostering in St Louis Park, MN.

Meet Winnie (#0188)! She is a 4 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd who loves to fetch! She is very obedient and would make the perfect addition to an active home with kids. Winnie came to Protégé overweight; she continues to lose weight and since she loves to be active, this is going very well. At this writing, she was at 45 lbs., but she will be on the smaller side when she gets to her ideal weight.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large.jpeg"]Protege #0188 Winnie[/frame_center]
Winnie is crate trained and likes having her crate in new environments, however she does not need it, and has never had problems roaming her foster parents’ house when they are away.

While Winnie loves children and people. Though she tended to growl at other dogs when she first came into the program, Winnie has been doing very well learning to get along. She is great with the neighbor dog, and now is even enjoying trips to the dog park! A game of fetch is best when shared with another dog you can race! She’d probably still prefer to be the only dog in the home, but if you socialize with other dogs and their famlies, Winnie can be a good choice.
Though sShe growled at her foster parents’ cats for the first couple days, after working with her she now ignores them, or sniffs curiously.
Winnie knows many tricks, and is always eager to learn more. Currently she knows come, sit, shake, lay-down, stay/wait, “go get it” (can be applied to a variety of things), “give it to me,” “Bring it closer,” “go find it,” “kennel up,” “go potty” and give kisses to name a few. She is awesome at catching a ball — we counted 84 times in a row with no misses on day! Winnie loves about any sort of ball toy and will come with some of her most special, if well-worn, ones.
Winnie is excellent off-leash and stays close. When playing in the field near their home her foster parents can tell her to go home and she goes to the door. They can also tell her to leave her ball outside and she puts it away outside.
As you can see from her video, Winnie really wants to get adopted! Winnie is up-to-date on her vaccinations and is ready to go to her forever home. Willie will add a ton of fun to your family. She is being fostered in Iowa City. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.
Hello! My name is Stanley. I am an Aussie mix and I will be 3 years old on May 4th. My human parents adopted me when I was just a puppy, but now I have a human brother too and it has been hard for them to give everyone the attention they need.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Stanley-Large-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Stanley-Large.jpeg"]Stanley[/frame_center]
Let me tell you about myself. I am about 50 pounds, my coat is red merle, and one of my eyes is blue. I am a medium energy dog, and I am starting to calm down a little bit as my puppy years are ending. I get along great with my human brother who is 18 months. I also have a dog brother that I get along with really well (a boxer). My favorite game is Frisbee, but any kind of fetch will do. I also love walks and runs, there is even a park here that I sometimes get to go hiking through off-leash. I never want to get too far away from my parents and I always come back whenever they call. I can get a little bit of cabin fever if I go too long without playing, so it is important that we have time to do that. When it is time to relax, I am always happy lying close by my parents.
I would love to come be a part of your family and I think I would make quite a nice addition as long as we have time to play together. I am living in Cedar Falls.

Roscoe (#0189) is a red tri Australian Shepherd who is almost a year old. He is up to date on all of his shots and is neutered. Roscoe was surrendered to a Shelter by his family because he was too active. He is a very lovable dog with a bright and funny personality. Roscoe loves playing with toys, people and other dogs. He is great at fetching balls or toys and loves playing tug. His foster mom is working on a release word for Roscoe so he knows when to let go of the tug. He is also learning to watch out for hands while he is tugging, because sometimes in his excited state Roscoe forgets where the tug ends and the hands start! Roscoe knows sit, down and come. He is also crate trained and housebroken. When Roscoe needs to go outside he will go to the door and whine.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Roscoe-large-400x251.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Roscoe-large.jpeg"]Roscoe (#0189)[/frame_center]
Roscoe is an energetic dog, but not overly active for his age or breed. He would do best in a home where he could go on daily walks, visit the dog park, play with other dogs or fetch balls in a backyard. Roscoe would be an excellent flyball, agility or frisbee dog. He has a high endurance level, learns very quickly, is toy and food motivated, and wants to please the humans in his life. After a walk or a run outside, Roscoe is perfectly content to come inside and nap on a dog
bed while his foster mom works around the house. Roscoe is such a likable dog he’s even convinced his foster sister, who is stubborn about who she plays with or even associates with, to be his good friend. He is smart with other dogs and knows when to be submissive.
Roscoe LOVES all people, attention and snuggling. He would be in seventh heaven if he could be someone’s lap dog; however, at Roscoe’s foster home he is not allowed on the furniture and he usually respects this rule. When Roscoe first came to his foster home he jumped on all the furniture, but learned via a squirt bottle (which is VERY affective with him for training some things) that getting on couches and beds was naughty. Sometimes when Roscoe is really excited playing with his fosters siblings he jumps on the couch, but he always listens right away when he’s told “get down.” When Roscoe meets new people he often jumps or puts his front paws on them because he is so happy to see them. His foster mom is working on teaching him to sit to be petted.
Roscoe has not chewed on anything inappropriate in his foster home because there are plenty of toys available for him to choose from. Because he loves training time, attention and pleasing people, it is clear that Roscoe can become the perfect dog for an active family.
Here are a couple of short videos of Roscoe in action:

If you no longer want to live a sedentary lifestyle…adopt an Australian Shepherd. If you want a relationship that challenges your intelligence…adopt an Australian Shepherd. If you want love, laughter, companionship and loyalty…then definitely adopt an Australian Shepherd. My husband, Doug, and I adopted three Aussies in 2010. We have Pete (blue merle), Parker (red merle), and Cpt. Jack (lethal white); and all of the previous descriptions truly apply to our crew.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Aenion-Ace-13-400x252.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Aenion-Ace-13.jpg"]Cpt. Jack[/frame_center]
The intelligence and protectiveness of this breed constantly amazes me. Pete has taught us that he is a true gentleman with us, but watch out if you are a stranger on his property. Parker will tell us where his bones/toys are if he’s unable to reach them (whether under a bakers rack, on a shelf, or in the crook of a tree); and if we can’t see what Parker is looking for, he will keep “talking” to us until we figure it out. Jack has taught us that even though he is deaf, he knows that if he moves the bells on the back door someone will come and open it. At times (I believe), they have taught us more than we have taught them.
Aussies are also known for being Velcro dogs. We have 3 degrees: 1) completely under foot or lying on top of it, should you get to stand still, 2) I am right here watching you and if you go to another location I’ll be there too; and 3) if you are missing something (dog related) come up to my hideaway and more than likely you will find it. The third one is Pete and he makes us laugh with all the stuff he will hoard/cover up in his blanket.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Aenion-Ace-08-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Aenion-Ace-08.jpg"]Meet The Pack[/frame_center]
The energy and speed of these dogs bewilders those that are not used to the breed. When our house-sitter first met the boys, we were talking in the kitchen when she caught “something” out of the corner of her eye fly by the window and wondered what it was – well it was the 3 amigos just playing in the back yard.
With the help of David Thurman and the Aussie Rescue site, we are blessed with three amazing Aussies that keep us constantly on the move, covered with kisses and immersed in hugs.
Toby was born into a world of noises – trucks zooming by, birds chirping, people talking, and the rustling of leaves under his paws. All of which he could not hear as Toby was born a double merle Aussie and deaf.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/NacogdochesM-Toby2--400x361.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/NacogdochesM-Toby2-.jpeg"]Toby[/frame_center]
Toby was found as a stray in Nacogdoches, TX, fending for himself. At just over a year of age, he was found and brought into a local shelter. Unfortunately, this didn’t mean that Toby was safe. Many shelters in the southern states are known as kill shelters, meaning that they hold dogs for a short time period and after that time, the dogs who haven’t been adopted are put to sleep.
Toby, while being a friendly and beautiful dog, was classified as a “special needs” dog due to his deafness, and therefore, undesirable to most adopters and this put him in extreme danger of euthanasia.
Thankfully, due to our network of volunteers, Toby was noticed by New Spirit and a plan quickly developed to move Toby north at once in order to save his life. He made the long voyage to Central Illinois to his new foster home that he would share with three other Aussies.
[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DSCF0034-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/DSCF0034.jpg"]Toby[/frame_center]
For this previously homeless dog, the experience of living in a house was all new to him. He no longer had to scavenge for his meals, as they now were served in a shiny bowl. He had to learn to navigate a staircase and learn how to be a house dog. He loved having siblings to play with all day long and started to come out of his shell, day by day.
Toby moved to a new foster home (what a lucky guy – two foster families!) to live with a family who had just recently said goodbye to their dog. Each day Toby would lavish love on his foster family as a way to show how grateful he was for the loving home they provided.
Just a short time later, Toby found a forever home with the Carver family from Carbondale, IL. But Toby had to bring his “A” game as he was competing for this family’s love with a little white Aussie puppy! But having the street smarts he did, Toby knew just who would be the deciding vote in the family. He went right over to the young girl and snuggled up to her. The girl fell for him hard and now Toby, a deaf dog living as a stray down south, is a part of a wonderful family for life.
Toby went from having a very sad story of having to find his own food, always being on the move, and not having a warm, dry place to sleep at night to a story with a truly happy ending.
