ADOPTED: NS Private Rocket 5 Year Old Black and White Border Collie Male Illinois

ADOPTED

Rocket is a 62 pound, 5 year old, black and white Border Collie. Though he is not an Aussie, Border Collies share many of the same traits (highly intelligent, trainable, etc.). He is completely housebroken with no accidents since he was a young pup. He has been crated in the past, but currently is gated in the back room of our house when he can’t be out and about.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Face-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Face.jpg"]NS Private Rocket[/frame_center]

Rocket is an unusual Border Collie in that he isn’t high energy and he doesn’t require a lot of exercise. He enjoys playing fetch, but is equally content lying down near the humans. He is very trainable and learns commands quickly – usually within 20 minutes or so of repetition. Due to his size and minor hip dysplasia, he is not much of a jumper, so could not learn agility, but he retained most basic obedience commands learned in his training as a pup. He knows tricks such as “sit pretty” (sits on hind legs and puts front paws on your knees), “high five”, “say hello” (nose to hand), and “paw”. We give Rocket Cosequin for his hip and he seems to have no pain or problems whatsoever. He is neutered and incredibly healthy in all other respects with his shots updated every year.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Smiling-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Smiling.jpg"]NS Private Rocket[/frame_center]

Rocket gets along fairly well with his 9 year old Border Collie/Austrailian Heeler sister, Darla. Unfortunately, he has started fights and had some resource issues in the past so cannot be left alone with her unwatched. He doesn’t actively seek companionship from Darla and would be happier in a home without other dogs or pets. We went to a trainer with expertise in Border Collies and she thought that he could be trained out of his dog/resource aggression.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RocketRight-400x316.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RocketRight.jpg"]NS Private Rocket[/frame_center]

Rocket is very obedient in the yard and will come when called 99% of the time. With a little training, it could be 100%. He is very food motivated, and is very gentle when taking treats. True to his name, he has occasional fits of energy and runs around our yard like a rocket. Then he takes a nap in the sunshine. He would be very happy in a home with a fenced in yard where he can play fetch and run.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/BicycleBoy-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/BicycleBoy.jpg"]NS Private Rocket[/frame_center]

Rocket is very good with new people when they are properly introduced. He is not fond of people who seem to be intruders. If he is in a yard, it should be secure from unannounced visitors and especially from children. Rocket does not seem to know what they are and is afraid of them. He showed fear of kids from the time we got him as a young pup. Since we didn’t have any young children at the time, or know any, we didn’t have an opportunity to acclimate him. We hoped that he would grow out of this fear, but we just don’t trust him with our 6 month old son and consequently have kept him in a separate part of the house unless we can give him our full attention or our son is in bed. This is unfair to Rocket, so we’ d really like to find a better home for him where he can be himself and be free to roam.

The best place for Rocket would be one with someone who is home most of the time and would like a companion. Rocket rarely barks and is generally a great guy to have around. He will play if you feel like it, but he won’t pester if you don’t. He generally just wants to be in the same room or close by to nap or roll on his back like a cat. We call him bicycle boy when he does this because his legs pump up and down like he is riding a bike.

Rocket is located in Chicago Illinois, but will travel by car within 4 hours distance for a good home. We expect him to lead a long and happy life with the right family. If you think you could be Rocket’s new best friend, please complete an application at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue, Reference Illinois Rocket.

ADOPTED: Protege #0193 Holly Red Tri Female Australian Shepherd Puppy Iowa

Holly (#0193) is an adorable red-tri puppy with beautiful hazel eyes. She weighs all of 13 pounds, is about 4 months old, and is doing so well after a sad start in life. Little Holly was saved by a rescue group after they saw her exhibited at an exotic animal show in Iowa. This group then turned Holly over to Protege and we are very glad to have her in our care. Her skin was dry and flaky and her fur was course. She was full of worms and dehydrated. After being examined by our vet, it was determined that the condition of Holly’s coat was from lack of nutrition and her poor paws were splayed from spending too much time in a wire cage. Despite her rough start, Holly is a sweet, mild-mannered, funny girl who wants nothing more than to romp with her doggie companions and snuggle up next to humans for some quiet attention.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Holly-Large-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Holly-Large.jpeg"]Protege #0193 Holly[/frame_center]

Holly’s feet are coming along nicely; in fact, they are very endearing….a little big for her petite body but maybe she’ll grow into them – and she is gaining muscle mass and much needed weight. She loves running around the yard, chases balls and toys, gets along great with dogs of all sizes and genders and LOVES kids. While she remains a bit cautious about new people, she warms up very quickly and prefers being touched on the bottom of her chin instead of being patted on top of her head. She is submissive and shares food, toys and love in a very busy household. She eats like a champ and has not had any accidents in our home. Despite her time in a wire cage, she welcomes a comfy crate and is not uncomfortable being in one for bedtime and while the humans are away. Holly can maintain a clean crate for up to 6 hours during the day and all night long. She doesn’t whimper unless she needs out to go potty.

Holly is one of the nicest, easiest fosters I’ve ever had in my home. She curls up in a little ball on the couch at night to get her loving from our 10 year old son and she gives kisses willingly. Holly’s sweet personality will win you over. Her forever home would likely include another canine companion to continue to improve her confidence and show her the ropes at her new home. She is gentle and kind to kids. She would do best with older kids who will respect her sweet demeanor and small size. She is ready to be spayed in a few weeks and will receive her rabies shot then as well. Holly is fostered in Marion, Iowa.

There are additional photos, including several “before” and “after” shots, and three cute videos of Holly at the Protege website for your viewing pleasure: http://protegerescue.org

If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

ADOPTED: NS 0640 Oakley 1.5 Year Old Aussie Mix Blue Merle Male Minnesota

Oakley is a 1.5yo Aussie mix. He’s a beautiful blue merle guy who is appx 50lbs. Between the couple shedding times, fall and spring, his hair loss is easily manageable. Oakley does not mind baths and the groomers rave about him! His coat is sooo soft and shiny. You will love touching him. Oakley knows basic commands like no, sit, drop, lay down, shake. He’s actually really relaxed when the house is calm and is often ready for and knows bed time. He’s the perfect alarm clock. If your alarm clock failed he would know and wake you up on the nose. Does still get excited and jumpy when people come to the door but I think it can be fixed with a little proper direction. He doesnt do it to me because he knows I wont allow it so I know he has the concept down. Is a MAJOR lover and is easy to love. He likes to be in close proximity to you or touching you when he lays down. He will often put his head on your lap and just lovingly stare at you and if you let him he will curl up on your lap just to be next to you. Have not seen him with small children but I think if he is taught boundaries he will be fine. Has never pottied in the house and will often go to the door to be let out. Oakley can be trusted loose in the house and does not destroy the house when you are gone, but he may sit on the couch. He does not have a problem with kennels and understands its a safe place. Oakley loves to fetch but needs a little coaxing to bring the ball back yet. If you are sitting he will bring it to you but if you are standing and waiting he thinks its a game.

Oakley gets along great with other dogs with no problem and loves to play with them. He will play for hours if another dog is willing to do the same. He has no problem if you get into his food while hes eating or if you put your hand near a treat. Tested this many times with no problem. Very trusting. Walks well on leash with occasional pull. Is alert at night when he needs to be. Loves toys-kong is best because they last more than a day. He often rolls on his back, legs spread and chews on his toy with no care in the world! Oakley sleeps with his head under couch or bed and gives a deep sigh when lights are out. Quite comical! Right now he spends most of his times loose in doors with free access to back yard now that it is warmer out. Have noticed a couple shallow holes in the yard but he does not consistently do it. I think he ran out of places to hide his bones. Does not have a problem being out in the snow for extended periods of time as long as he has something to do and its not freezing. He rides in a car very calmly without barking. He is extremely smart and wants to please you. Oakley is fostering in Plymouth, MN.
