ADOPTED: ASRM 0020 Maggie Puppy 10 Weeks Old Blue Merle Female Lethal White Australian Shepherd Illinois

ADOPTED!

Meet sweet little Maggie, a 8 week old lethal white blue merle female Australian Shepherd. She came to us after being removed from a situation that was not ideal, with the summers 100+ heat, she had only a little bowl of water, and she was covered in fleas. A kind Samaritan saw her crawl out from under a blanket. She was starved and had been taken from her mother at 4 weeks old.

Maggie is what comes from the breeding of 2 blue merle or red merles and the end result is a puppy who is mostly white, usually deaf and sometimes blind. Maggie is just deaf, and seems to see just fine. She has striking blue eyes, she loves to be held and snuggle with anyone that will let her.

Maggie will stand her own with the big dogs in the house, loves to drag bones as big or some twice as big as she is. She loves to herd at the age of 8 years old, so be ready for all your cats to be rounded up in a hurry, or the kids in the neighborhood.

Maggie is being fostered in Bloomington Illinois. To adopt this soft, caring little girl, complete an application at Australian Shepherd Rescue Midwest. Reference ASRM 0020

  1. Why do you use the term “lethal white?” This is an inappropriate term and it’s usage in Aussies should stop. Is this puppy dying? Do you expect it to die? If not, then you’ve used an inaccurate term. While excessive white may carry some negative health issues, premature death is not usually among them. Please see: http://www.lethalwhites.com/lethalwhite.html
That having been said, I hope the puppy gets a home. She’s certainly had a rough start. I hope there were some criminal repercussions for her former owner.

  2. Hello Kim

I appreciate your view and while she is in no means in danger of being put down, the sad truth is that we are contacted constantly about a double merle/lethal white Australian Shepherd, who we are told will be put down if we don’t rescue her or him. Also the lethal’s are pretty much given a death sentence in many shelters because of their handicap situation.

If using the term Lethal White (which is really related to the horse family) gets peoples attention, helps to educate, and gets across the point of their plight, then I am more then willing to use it.

She is getting many offers and we hope in no time this small puppy will find a home that wants to work with her and her hearing issue.

  3. That was interesting – never heard the term “lethal white”. People often put too much emphasis on the negativity of a term, however if you hadn’t used that term I may not have been that interested in finding out more about this puppy and the plight of those like her. She is as cute as a button, so I probably would have looked anyhow – but now I know a new term and what it means, so in the future if I see it I will be able to respond appropriately!! I will definitely be forwarding this sweet girl on to my aussie pals, although we are a long ways from Illinois. Prayers for a new home for this little missy!!
