Are you thinking of getting a dog? Have you ever considered rescuing a dog who needs a new home, rather than purchasing a puppy?

Welcome to Protege Canine Rescue! Protege specializes in rescuing and re-homing Australian Shepherds and other select dogs from around Iowa. We rescue Aussies with a wide range of ages, colors, temperaments, and energy levels. If you’re looking for an Aussie in the Iowa area, be sure to explore our Available Dogs.

We also rescue a special group of dogs, some Aussies, some other breeds, that we think would make outstanding performance dogs. These high-drive dogs need a lot of exercise and mental stimulation, and while perfect for dog sports, will not be satisfied with a walk around the block!

All our dogs have been assessed for their adaptability and compatability as companions and pets. All are current on vet work and spayed or neutered.

We do not ship our dogs; you must be willing to travel to meet your prospective new friend. We think you’ll find a unique rescue experience with Protege, and hope you’ll enjoy meeting our available dogs.

Our dogs have happy-ending stories. We work hard to make the right placement and to make sure your new companion is the best dog for you. Check out this video of one of our former foster dogs, Bleu (from the NBC Nightly News in September 2009) — she’s the blue merle Aussie, a rescue dog who’s become a star! As her mom Bonnie says, “She always steals the show! She is a VERY photogenic dog … and VERY smart! She is now being cross-trained for the basketball part of the show with her signature move being a spin before dunking the ball! She loves learning anything new. Like I have said many times before…..she is the absolute perfect dog for us!”

Rugby (Protege #0159) red Bi Australian Shepherd Puppy

Posted July 28th, 2010 by David Thurman
Rugby (Protege #0159)

Rugby (Protege #0159)

Rugby (Protege #0159) is a pint-sized velcro Aussie with a full-sized Aussie heart. A full 8.4 pounds at 1-1/2 years old, he holds his own as long as you’re willing to let him snuggle in your lap after a long day. Rugby is getting used to the new routines with his foster family, which includes a toddler, two much larger Aussies and many cats. Slowly he is getting use to the other animals, often trying to make up for his size by showing them who is boss – this is the only time he brings out his voice. He’s wonderful with the energetic toddler and with both men or women.

Rugby is also overcoming a bit of skittishness and just flat out jealousy, but is doing nicely. His foster home is working on crate training, basic commands, basic playing and learning that the other animals are no big deal – really! Rugby is comfortable and alert inside or outside the home, loving to playfully help his foster mom in the garden.

Rugby is up to date on shots, neutered, and recovering from a mild case of hookworms. He is beging fostered between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City, Iowa. Contact Jayne at mcjayne {at} yahoo(.)com with questions and for more information. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Ace (Protege #0162) Red Bi Australian Shepherd Iowa

Posted July 28th, 2010 by David Thurman
Ace (Protege #0162)

Ace (Protege #0162)

Ace (Protege #0162) is a 5 month old red-tri Aussie puppy. He has a desire to please people and learns new things quickly. Ace has learned how to hit it (touching his nose to your hand) and how to spin left to right. Ace also knows how to sit, lie down, and fetch. He is still working on housebreaking. He is very good at going potty outside as long as you take him out often. Ace is kennel trained. If you get a treat out and ask him to go to his kennel he will go in right away.

Ace has been exposed to a lot of different dogs and has yet to meet a dog that he doesn’t get a long with. He is very respectful towards the other dogs and will give them space if they need it.

Ace really seems to enjoy the water. In the last week or so Ace has learned to fetch a toy from the water and give it to his foster mom to be thrown in again. He is a very well-rounded puppy, ready to please and to learn from his new owners.

Ace is current on vaccinations and will be neutered before he is adopted. He is being fostered in Coralville, Iowa.

If you think Ace might be a good match, please contact Jayne at mcjayne {at} mcquillen(.)org. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Meet Cheri a private referral in Iowa

Posted March 17th, 2010 by David Thurman
Cheri

Cheri

Cheri is a 1-2 year old red-tri Aussie. She is on the small side, standing about 17 inches tall, with a thick coat, docked tail. She could use some grooming to remove mats. She was found as a stray in rural Iowa and taken to the Safe Haven Shelter in Williamsburg.

Protege evaluated her, and she is a very sweet girl, she loves, loves, loves human attention in any way possible. Once you start petting her, she flops over on her back for belly rubs & she can’t get enough belly rubs! You can touch her anywhere, it’s all good with her!

We would have taken Cheri into our rescue program but she does have 1 flaw, she does NOT get along with other dogs. She can coexist with a non-reactive dog peacefully in the kennel run next to her, but if she’s in their presence outside of the kennel she’d really like to start a fight, even with a submissive dog.

Cheri will need a home that can keep her from getting into trouble with other dogs, she will need to be managed on walks or in public places with other dogs. If you are interested in additional information please contact the Safe Haven Shelter directly via their Web site or by phone at (319) 325-0150, and they can tell you more about her.
