But luckily, hair grows back. Shawn is appx 3yo and is great with other dogs, kids and even cats! He is very affectionate and sweet, he will make a wonderful family dog! Shawn is fostering in Minnesota.

Meet Cody, a 3 year old blue merle male Australian Shepherd, he was one of the first Aussies I had ever rescued when I was the rep for ARPH in Illinois. Cody was always low energy and always gentle. He had the face of a wise man and the soul of an every greater man. Katie and her husband met Cody and took him all the way from Chicago to Minneapolis one day and decided he was the Aussie for them.

Cody Giving His Love

Cody was always shy of the camera and would turn his head or hide when he thought he was getting his picture taken, we thought he might have been a dog from a home in the witness protection program, but we did get pictures and he is a beautiful Australian Shepherd.

Cody On Squirrel Patrol

Over the weekend of the 8th of May, Cody began to not eat and was becoming lethargic, and having trouble breathing, within just 2 days the worst news of all came, he had cancer and it was impacting his lungs and ability to breath, sadly he passed away on the operating table and now were joy and happiness rained, is a large hole where his presence is no longer.

We all will miss this gentle man, and know he is waiting at the bridge to be reunited with Katie and her family.

Adopted

Redcliffe (also known as Ruby) is a senior Red Tri Australian Shepherd female who is around 11+ years old, who weighs around 50 pounds. She is the result of her owner passing away and being left alone and afraid.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-08-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-08.jpg"]NS 0996 Redcliffe (Ruby)[/frame_center]

Redcliffe is a low energy, Velcro Australian Shepherd. She can get around just fine but may need a boost into the car. She walks great on leash, and is respectful of other dogs. She loves to be with you and will sit at your side while reading or keep you company while in the garden. Redcliffe is a little hard of hearing but that does not stop her or keep her from staying in range.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-12-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-12.jpg"]NS 0996 Redcliffe (Ruby)[/frame_center]

Redcliffe is ready for a home that would let her finish her years in peace, a home with rough or overly playful dogs would be too much for her at this age in her life. She would do fine when the grandkids came over and she is on Proin to help control her bladder.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-11-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Ruby-Senior-11.jpg"]NS 0996 Redcliffe (Ruby)[/frame_center]

Tales of Aussie Rescue had a tough Christmas this year, we lost a few Aussies to unforeseen situations, but especially sad was to lose Remy, a little blue merle miniature Australian Shepherd. Remy came to me from one of our rescue transport contacts as a please help situation.

Remy on Christmas Day

With the economy just starting to go south with many losing jobs, and homes, I think Remy was the start of the avalanche that was Aussies without homes. He was tossed from home to home, never being a bother, just an Aussie without a true spot.

Step in the Standards and their offer to foster him until his owner could find a job and a home, which never happened, then the process of allowing a wonderful family to adopt this little Aussie, who was stone deaf. Remy wiggled his way into the foster family, and it was know for sure the day I had an application that wanted to adopt him, and the foster family decided he had found his spot.

Remy on Christmas Day

Remy was always part of the Standards pack, and he was always there, always happy and always a great ambassador to the Aussie breed.

Remy on Christmas Day

Sadly on New Year morning, after having been on a walk, Remy suffered a series of seizures, one after another, and after an emergency rush to the animal hospital, it was decided Remy was done with his duties and his teachings to the human race, and it was time he was headed back, to a world were he would never have a seizure and he will always hear his name called.

Rest In Peace Remy 2011

Last month this beautiful black tri Australian Shepherd was rescued from a shelter, she was terrified and very timid, scared of everything and everyone. Many Aussies when they are dumped and find themselves at a shelter seem to shutdown or to start to exhibit behavior that others will consider aggression. We in the Aussie Rescue know this is more of a reaction and can be resolved with a quick removal from the shelter.

Anise

Well Anise was placed in foster care, she was making major strides, and was chosen by a family for adoption. They fell in love with her sad eyes and small stature. She went home with them to begin a new life, only that was cut short. You see something we tell our adopters, and we know many are thinking we are just being preachy, but we do this for a reason, that new Aussie is scared, it doesn’t know it’s name, as many will change the name once they come home, and we aren’t always sure what their name is so we rename them, talk about confused and not knowing what to do when they hear a garble noise.

Anise

Well when Anise came in after her first official walk, the door bumped her in the butt and she spooked, and bolted out the door running with her leash still attached. The new adopters were devastated and searched for her every hour of every day, using all the techniques we suggested, but nothing worked, add in that we just experienced the coldest blast of arctic air, and we have a disaster, and painful reminder of what we need to do to protect any new dog we bring home, adopter or foster, it doesn’t matter, these are scared, confused dogs that need to be given extra care and protection.

Anise

Anise was found 2 weeks later, in a spot that they had searched many times before, she was found frozen to death, a very sad and very lonely ending to such a potential girl. We ask that everyone when they bring their new Aussie home please remember Anise, and her horrible struggle, and don’t let her loss go without a meaning. Read our 1st week tips, and please let us explain what we feel are important rules to follow. As the Upper Midwest Coordinator, I am the first to receive the call, email or text that an Aussie has gone missing. It has to be one of the few things in rescue we all hate to hear, and feeling powerless to help sitting hundreds of miles away.

Meet Bono, a 1 year old black tri Australian Shepherd who for no fault of his own came to our rescue. His owner said they couldn’t care and afford him anymore, he had a rash, and he was thought to have those nasty worms.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono2-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono2.jpg"]NS 0631 Bono Needs Your Help[/frame_center]

Once we settled Bono in and got him tested for worms, as well as we had him neutered, all the first week of his arrival and to find he had Giardia. With the nasty bug and his neuter surgery, his foster mom noticed he was very sluggish and not as active as he should be, even with all his ailments. We recommend he head in for a checkup. We were expecting the worst, and hoping for the best, but we got the worst.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono1-400x266.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono1.jpg"]NS 0631 Bono Needs Your Help[/frame_center]

Bono needs a total hip replacement, both hips, and it will be expensive. He is a great dog, he is considerate of all dogs he meets, he wants to run and play, but without any actual hip sockets, he struggles and wears out quickly. We are going to proceed with this surgery and give this boy a normal life.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono-41-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bono-41.jpg"]NS 0631 Bono Needs Your Help[/frame_center]

If you could reach into your pocket, maybe skip one present for the family and instead send it to New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue, we would be very indebted, as would Bono so he can run and play with all the other guys and girls in his world.

When we took Hamul (actually his name is Pepper) into the rescue, he came in because his groomer recommened the family let him live with a family that would keep him exercised. At only 2 years old he weighed almost 75 pounds. He was a slug, and when they shaved him down, I nicknamed him my Holstein / Aussie Mix as his colors were close to a Holstein Cow, no offense to Pepper, just he was cute as a Aussie/Cow mix. I was lucky in my fantastic network of foster homes to actually be given a new foster home to bring on board, one that was up for the task to have Pepper lose weight. Enter Roxanne and her drive to get Pepper in shape. Below is what she did for our little Aussie, who came in at 75 pounds and is walking out the door eventually to a forever home at almost 20 pounds lighter.

Pepper Overweight

First thing was to get him swimming. He loves the wubba so after a few times of throwing that into the pool and watching my dog go in to get it, he was not happy seeing her get his toy. So he decided to make a big splash and go and get his toy, and I was in right after him. He swam wonderful but I needed to keep him swimming and not just jumping in. I put a leash on him and lead him around the pool. That soon became a daily activity, usually twice a day we did that.

Pepper's Famous Belly Flop

Pepper Starts The Program

Next was walking and for quite sometime it was more like me pulling him on the walks. He loved to be out seeing new things he just didn’t want to walk. So for this I used treats. I cooked some beef liver. It’s a very motivating smell and I could give very small pieces and it has no additives or preservatives. He now walks at a good pace without stopping and we walk 2 miles a day. His energy level has improved beyond my expectation, now we are working on Pepper not pulling me. I guess he is paying me back LOL.

Now I had to give him a job to feel good about himself and work for his meals, so we play fetch. He did not want to do this in the beginning, but he soon caught on that he gets his meal after he plays fetch. He is jumping up to catch the ball and racing Lacey to get to them.

Pepper Losing Weight

Pepper’s diet is the same thing that I feed my dog a species appropriate diet basically it’s raw meaty bones. Raw rabbit, chicken, beef, turkey, venison, fish, eggs and pork. 80% meat 10% bone 10% organs If you would like more info on this, go to raw meaty bones or Tom Lonsdale lots of info. My opinion is this is what got the weight off of him so quickly and helped in building muscle. Most of Pepper and Lacey’s treats are carrots, strawberries apples slices or cooked chicken and beef livers. I do as much natural and holistic as possible.

Thanks Roxanne, and for those that want this now Ripped Aussie, get in line, he is going to go fast…

Aussies are natural athletes, and they often excel at any sport they are pointed at. I personally compete with my own two Aussies in K9 disc and the physical and mental demands it puts on all three of us has made us a healthier, more balanced pack. It’s exercise, it’s training, it’s stimulation that most dogs need every day to keep them tired and happy.

K9 Frisbee

In competition, there are two different timed events. Toss and Catch has the handler standing behind a throw line at one end of the field. The dog must begin behind the line as the announcer counts down. The object is to throw far, but control it enough for your dog to catch it. Only caught discs are counted towards the score. Make as many throws and catches within one minute as you can. The second event is Freestyle. And it is exactly that. The handler and dog have up to two minutes to pull out as many tricks and throws as possible to their favorite music. The possibilities are endless, as long as you are not putting your dog in harms way. Tricks include back stalls, flip catches, leg and back overs, leg and back and chest vaults, spins and more!

But never fear. If the thought of standing in front of a roaring crowd to play Frisbee with your dog sends you running for the hills, you don’t have to do it competitively! It can just be you and your dog in your backyard, having some fun. FUN is the magic word and as long as it’s being had while you’re disc doggin, then you’re golden.

So pick up a round piece of plastic and get your dog flying! Frisbee is fun for all involved and anybody can participate. Check out www.Skyhoundz.com or www.Herodisc.com to find different varieties of canine safe Frisbees and a slew of information on disc doggin! Google your nearest disc dog club and get involved! And most importantly, have fun with your dog!.’$>

Straight from Her new mom! Our little blue merle Australian Shepherd female from Iowa is adopted!

Serah aka-Shilo (now Clementine) is doing well. She gets along with everyone at home and really loves going for her walks. She’s ok on a leash, and much better on her harness. We haven’t tried her off-leash yet.

Clementine Relaxes At Her New Home

She’s a little too fond of jumping on furniture, but we’re working on that. (That is to say, some of us are trying to get her to stop, and a select few seem to think it’s pretty cute, e.g., “she fits perfectly on the couch!“)

Clem is also good with visitors to the house, our cat, and sleeping in her dog bed (instead of on my bed). She comes when she’s called, and has proved to be something of a glutton–she’s very food-motivated. There have been incidences of rolling in gross stuff, and Clementine behaved very well in the subsequent, necessary, baths.

We’ve also discovered that she plays fetch! She’s less fond of frisbee, which is ok, because none of us can throw a frisbee with any degree of consistency.

Hurray for Clementine!

At Tales of Aussie Rescue, we aren’t just all Aussies, we also have volunteers and foster homes that also have other 4 legged friends in their homes that are the other great breeds.

Our volunteer/foster home in the Montgomery area, Laura walked their 12 year old Corgi, named Baxter, also known as Bunny Butt, to Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday, November 9th 2010. Baxter came into their home with a small bark and a smile, and kept that up for them every single day. Baxter loved to run and play, and as a puppy was enamored with a little toy carrot, so fitting for his aka of Bunny Butt.

Baxter (aka Bunny Butt)

Laura and her family said he was a good dog and he taught them love every minute of every day he was in their lives (this is why they are here for so short a time, they give so much that they wearer out so fast). Laura said he was her personal favorite (good thing Bueller can’t read or have access to the computer-Bueller is Baxter’s Aussie brother) even if he got grumpy in his old age. He was even a great lover between and during his growls.

Baxter, you should know that Laura and your family miss you and thank you for all your time and the love you gave.

We know you will be waiting at that bridge, with all the other dogs to guide your owners across and show them just how much you knew about rainbow bridge and why you never worried about the end, you knew each day was special.

Bye Baxter

You see Jager was given to us from down in the Western Kentucky area, only to now get a home down in Tennessee. Doug and Sheryl did a great job giving him a home.

Our little girl Shayla who was shot, then attacked when she went to a farm house for help, has been battling to save the back leg that was shot. After a long journey across Iowa that spring day bank in May, to now, we are still in a struggle to keep her as a 4-legged little girl.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-26-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-26.jpg"]Shayla After 1st Surgery[/frame_center]

Shayla is around 1 year old, she has the heart of a real trooper, she is always affectionate and loves everyone in her foster home, she gets along great with her 2 foster sisters, sometimes even sharing a bed.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-74-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-74.jpg"]Shayla Shares a Bed[/frame_center]

Shayla also has 2 human foster brothers an she treats them like a real sister would, hanging out, and playing, but they refuse to do tea-time with her, but we will work on that, come on guys, she’s just a girl

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-81-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-81.jpg"]Come On Guys, Lets Play Barbies![/frame_center]

We have put Shayla through numerous surgeries to try to save her leg, she has been in a cast for almost 12 weeks, but the latest X-rays didn’t look promising, infect there seemed to be no bone growth at all, this whole time she has been great and runs and plays with her sisters as if she was 100%.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-29-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-29.jpg"]The Girls Get Together[/frame_center]

So now we come to a crossroads with Shayla, our next option is to remove her leg, but we also know once it’s gone, it’s gone for good, so being the optimist we are, and her doctor feeling she has a chance, performed a new procedure this week. They are trying to revitalize the bone ends, they have put a ceramic brace around her leg to restrict any and all movement.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-73-293x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Shayla-Shadow-73.jpg"]Shayla Receives A Blessing[/frame_center]

Keep our little girl in your prayers, and if you can find it to help defray all her medical costs, please donate today to Shayla’s medical fund.

If you can start the day without caffeine.

If you can get going without pep pills.

If you can always be cheerful, ignoring aches and pains.

If you can resist complaining and boring people with your troubles.

If you can eat the same food every day and be grateful for it.

If you can understand when your loved ones are too busy to give you any time.

If you can overlook it when those you love take it out on you, when, through no fault of yours, something goes wrong.

If you can ignore an friend's limited education and never correct him.

If you can resist treating a rich friend better than a poor friend.

If you can face the world without lies and deceit.

If you can conquer tension without medical help.

If you can relax without liquor.

If you can say honestly that deep in your heart you have no prejudice against creed, color or politics.

Then, my friend, you are almost as good as your dog.

The story of Rio has been going on since the end of May 2010 when Hal and Michelle adopted him from me, he was one of the first Aussies we brought into New Spirit, maybe the 4th or 5th Aussie for Illinois when we started the chapter.

No sooner then Hal had him home, they wanted to walk at the Rock Cut State Park near Rockford IL. Sadly when they opened the car door, something spooked him and he bolted out of the car and the chase was on. Hal went daily to the park to try and capture him, dealing with the animal control in Winnebago County, and placing flyers everywhere. My small part was to place his loss on our IL Website and on Facebook.

Meet Ozzie (formerly Lost Rio)

I would speak to Hal almost every week for almost 2 months about his being spotted and almost being caught, only to have him move and start appearing somewhere else.

Meet Ozzie (formerly Lost Rio)

This week I received an email and a web posting from a family in the Mulford Hills area. Animal control was called and a live trap was set out, Rio just walked right by it. If they called his name he would run. Rio would come daily to Kay’s home and play with their their dog. He would even get within a few feet of them. He also has been sleeping on their front porch.

Well something happened and he was so close that they could actually pet him, they even were able to place a leash on him, in-fact he was leashed and walked inside. They have been keeping him indoors, and take him out to potty, and when he is done, he wants to come right back inside.

So we have decided he has selected the family he wants to have take care of him. Hal and his family will visit with him, and everyone is all in agreement that he belongs with his new family. So Rio is now home, with a new name, Ozzie!

Welcome back Rio, I mean Ozzie!

Meet Azel, a 9 year old Australian shepherd who came to us at Aussie Rescue IL from a comment at our Ottawa Bark in the Park, I was manning the booth and was told of an Aussie that was found on the side of the road, he had been hit by a car, and he had suffered facial injuries, bad enough that surgery was required to save his jaw, it was wired back into place. Azel survived that incident and was recovering in a rescue in the Ottawa/Peru area, Illinois Valley Animal Rescue.

Chris contacted me and told me she had this brave Australian Shepherd, a blue merle with a tail, and she was hoping a rescue like ours, we specialize in the Aussie, could take him and help him find a forever home, someone that would treat him like a new puppy. All our adopters treat all our Aussies like a new born pup, a real member of the family. So with IVAR covering what was already a $500.00 vet/surgery bill we took him into our rescue with New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue.

Azel had been with his new foster mom for a few weeks and she was alarmed that he would drink lots of water and then “pee a river” which she as a trained vet-technician felt it could be a sign of things to check. After a full blood-work-up, it was discovered that Azel has kidney disease, which is going to require he eat a special diet and take a supplement to give him a life that he could finish out with normal urinary functions and a normal life span, without these 2 items, he would more then likely endue passing away or worse we would have to bring his life to a final chapter, and we want him to have all the chances he deserves, he did survive a car accident.

Azel Leans Into Life

So we are asking for your help to offset his monthly costs while he is in foster care until we find a family that feels an Aussie like Azel belongs in their home. So open you wallet or purse, and donate something to Azel so he can have a long life and a chance to play with other dogs and his future family.

OzzY was renamed to become Bandit, and he is said to be stealing kisses and hearts with everyone he meets. Bandit was one of 5 Aussie puppies we rescued from Missouri earlier this summer.

I received a phone call Wednesday around 11:30 AM from one of my foster homes that has been a home that always takes any Aussie I have that needs a home and lots of TLC.

Dot before she was on her way to New Spirit

Susan E took Dot in for me as I needed a home that I knew would baby her to no end. Dot was sent to us with some horrible mats in her hair, dried poop and tangles covered her back end from top to bottom. Dot was one of those dogs like you see on Last Chance Highway that are just chained up and left alone, not sure why you get a dog to chain up and forget, but their disregard was New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue’s gain, as we got Dot!

Dot Relaxing This Summer on the deck

Dot was also a lethal white Aussie, she was deaf but could see well, We had adopted her out once only to return because she was acting up at the new adopter’s home, maybe she knew something, and maybe she wanted to stay with Susan. She came back and was all happy to be back home, so we worked on a new adopter, which was to happen this weekend, a great home with Freddie and her boyfriend, Freddie wanted an older more mature girl. That was Dot.

Dot Enjoys Everything

Sadly Wednesday morning Dot woke and was not hungry, she skipped breakfast, and went out to potty, she came back in and chased the cat, went back out and peed, and then came in and laid in the corner, looked as Susan and gave a whimper, and then collapsed. Susan tried CPR/mouth to snout rescue, but Dot had decided she was ready to go, and play at the Bridge, waiting for all our other rescues to come and meet her, letting them know they were to wait and play, and help all the other rescues find safety across the bridge.

Where is Dot?

Dot again relaxing

We all will miss Dot, Susan the most, and ask you send great thoughts and typical Aussie kisses and butt wiggles.

Goodbye Dot
