Meet sweet little Maggie, a 8 week old lethal white blue merle female Australian Shepherd. She came to us after being removed from a situation that was not ideal, with the summers 100+ heat, she had only a little bowl of water, and she was covered in fleas. A kind Samaritan saw her crawl out from under a blanket. She was starved and had been taken from her mother at 4 weeks old.

Maggie is what comes from the breeding of 2 blue merle or red merles and the end result is a puppy who is mostly white, usually deaf and sometimes blind. Maggie is just deaf, and seems to see just fine. She has striking blue eyes, she loves to be held and snuggle with anyone that will let her.

Meet Sae Dee!!!

Sae Dee is a gorgeous 5yo blue merle female Australian Shepherd. She’s a ‘tweenie’ Aussie, which means she’s bigger than a mini but smaller than a standard!  She’s the perfect size!  She’s got one blue eye and one chocolate eye, giving her a very unique look. Sae Dee loves people and isn’t shy about anything. She will gently stand up in front of you to be petted. Sae Dee is very interested in cats and will chase them, so a home without any cats is recommended, unless you feel capable of controlling the situation. Sae Dee seems fine with most other dogs as well. She loves to play with them.

Sae Dee is crate trained and actually enjoys spending her down time in her crate. She sleeps quietly through the night. Though if you didnt want to crate her, she does just wonderfully left loose! Sae Dee doesnt chew or get into things and her foster family leaves her free to roam the house while they are away at work. Sae Dee is tennis ball and frisbee crazy!  She will bring the ball to you to throw for her until one of you gets tired. She loves to play and is very happy to hang out around the house. Merlin is an 8-10yo self blue merle Australian Shepherd male. We aren’t sure of his actual age. He is a standard size and weighs approx. 45lbs. He has a pretty blue fleck in one of his eyes and it gives him an overall ‘sorcerer’s’ appearance. Merlin recently lost the love of his life, whom he’d been with for all of his 10 years. He was devastated, but he is beginning to pick up the pieces and learning to love life as a single man for the first time in his life.

Merlin gets along great with other dogs, and even gets along with cats and children! He’s a sweet, mellow guy with a lot of years left in him!  Merlin is housebroken and crate trained already too! He is very quiet in his crate and will just hang out if you need him to. But he doesn’t get into trouble in the house. Merlin is hard of hearing in his senior years. He’s not completely deaf, but much of it is gone. But he’s still a fabulous guy. Merlin rides easily loose in a vehicle. If you are looking for a perfect family Aussie, Merlin is your guy!

He will come to vibration (we stomp our foot or clap loudly) and can also sit and down. He is so exceptionally smart, that I think he would out do Wanderoo if he wasn’t a little limited with the vision. He is also very laid back, mellow, and just a fluffy lover boy. I think he could definitely learn to follow your scent on a walk, and he is able to navigate a full flight of stairs with no problem. Because of his underdeveloped eyes, he might have to be watched in the sun, but other than that he is very healthy (and a terrific eater!).

He is the biggest of the bunch- a week ago he was 15.1 pounds. I really think given his personality and his smarts he will make a very, very good pet, so don’t count him out. Unlike most Aussies, he would likely do well in a small house or apartment. He spends lots of time sitting in my lap as I work on the computer- and that might become a problem when he reaches his full 45-50 pounds!

Wogonda is a very sweet and somewhat timid lethal white blue merle Australian Shepherd male. He has lots of blue merle spots, so he resembles his sister Wanderoo quite a bit, without the colored ear.  He has good vision in one eye and some vision in the other, and of course he is deaf.

He is very laid back, but will allow Wanderoo to lead him into trouble. Being timid, he tends to be quite vocal when out of his element or afraid- his howl is loud, but he is very quickly comforted with a quick hug or bet of reassurance. Even though he is timid, he is a very quick learner- again, he can come, sit and down already.  He would be best with a gentle older dog rather than another rambunctious dog, and a home that is not super active but somewhat active. , He would be a good dog to walk with and take around town. He seems to be a good candidate for riding in the car, and if it involves a stop at the Ice Cream shop, well all the better!

Wanderoo is a lethal white blue merle female who will grow to around 45-50 pounds. She has a docked tail and is covered with blue merle markings.

She is deaf, but sees just fine. She has one black ear and lots of spots. She is as sweet as can be- loves to cuddle and lick your face and is just all sweetness. She is also exceptionally smart (will come, sit and down already). Because she is so smart, she tends to get herself into a bit of trouble- she likes to escape through the fence (and every time I think I have her outwitted she wins again!). The good news is she sticks around and doesn’t wander TOO much. She does seem to find each and every burr in the woods and get it into her fur.

She can find any contraband in the house (electrical cords, etc.), and is maybe a little too adventuresome for her own good.

Shawn is a beautiful black Aussie mix with a full tail. Or it was full, until it was shaved!  Shawn came into the shelter with some severe matting and was given a pretty brutal haircut. But luckily, hair grows back. Shawn is appx 3yo and is great with other dogs, kids and even cats! He is very affectionate and sweet, he will make a wonderful family dog! Shawn is fostering in Minnesota.

Cody was always shy of the camera and would turn his head or hide when he thought he was getting his picture taken, we thought he might have been a dog from a home in the witness protection program, but we did get pictures and he is a beautiful Australian Shepherd.

Over the weekend of the 8th of May, Cody began to not eat and was becoming lethargic, and having trouble breathing, within just 2 days the worst news of all came, he had cancer and it was impacting his lungs and ability to breath, sadly he passed away on the operating table and now were joy and happiness rained, is a large hole where his presence is no longer.

We all will miss this gentle man, and know he is waiting at the bridge to be reunited with Katie and her family.

Pumpkin walks perfect on a leash and LOVES to go for walks, tolerates other dogs, is good around children and will stay off furniture and the beds. She is afraid of thunderstorms and as such will try ti go under the bed, showing only her tail as proof she is around, but when you say her name, the tail becomes animated and shows her understanding you are there for her.

Oakley gets along great with other dogs with no problem and loves to play with them. He will play for hours if another dog is willing to do the same. He has no problem if you get into his food while hes eating or if you put your hand near a treat. Tested this many times with no problem. Very trusting. Walks well on leash with occasional pull. Is alert at night when he needs to be. Loves toys-kong is best because they last more than a day. He often rolls on his back, legs spread and chews on his toy with no care in the world! Oakley sleeps with his head under couch or bed and gives a deep sigh when lights are out. Quite comical! Right now he spends most of his times loose in doors with free access to back yard now that it is warmer out. Have noticed a couple shallow holes in the yard but he does not consistently do it. I think he ran out of places to hide his bones. Does not have a problem being out in the snow for extended periods of time as long as he has something to do and its not freezing. He rides in a car very calmly without barking. He is extremely smart and wants to please you. Oakley is fostering in Plymouth, MN.

Rally is a little shy when meeting someone new, but give him a treat and you’ve got a friend for life. He gets along great with other dogs and is fine with cats. He is a little timid around children.

Rally is housebroken and we are working on basic training. He knows how to sit, lie down, spin and shake! He does wonderfully on car rides, mostly just lays down in the seat next to you. He is just a very easy-going dog. He loves to go on walks and will follow you anywhere. Well, except to the bathroom: since he got a bath, he is a little timid of it. But is starting to venture in.

She’s a busy girl, who loves toys, bones, playing with other dogs, and chasing the squirrels outside, and the cat inside. She’s a very quick learner and does all she can to please you. You don’t need to teach her things twice, and she is definitely remorseful when she forgets. She’s learning the command “sit,” and is house and kennel-trained. She’s definitely a lover too and soaks up any and all attention you’ll give her. She plays well with children and will make her new family quite happy. Cassie is fostering in Minneapolis, MN.

Winnie is crate trained and likes having her crate in new environments, however she does not need it, and has never had problems roaming her foster parents’ house when they are away.

While Winnie loves children and people. Though she tended to growl at other dogs when she first came into the program, Winnie has been doing very well learning to get along. She is great with the neighbor dog, and now is even enjoying trips to the dog park! A game of fetch is best when shared with another dog you can race! She’d probably still prefer to be the only dog in the home, but if you socialize with other dogs and their famlies, Winnie can be a good choice.

Though sShe growled at her foster parents’ cats for the first couple days, after working with her she now ignores them, or sniffs curiously.

Winnie knows many tricks, and is always eager to learn more. Currently she knows come, sit, shake, lay-down, stay/wait, “go get it” (can be applied to a variety of things), “give it to me,” “Bring it closer,” “go find it,” “kennel up,” “go potty” and give kisses to name a few. She is awesome at catching a ball — we counted 84 times in a row with no misses on day! Winnie loves about any sort of ball toy and will come with some of her most special, if well-worn, ones.

Winnie is excellent off-leash and stays close. When playing in the field near their home her foster parents can tell her to go home and she goes to the door. They can also tell her to leave her ball outside and she puts it away outside.

As you can see from her video, Winnie really wants to get adopted! Winnie is up-to-date on her vaccinations and is ready to go to her forever home. Willie will add a ton of fun to your family. Hardy is a smaller male Aussie, weighing in at about 30 lbs. He came from a home that could no longer keep him, and now needs someone who can take him and love him forever. He is a happy boy, with good spirits who enjoys people and dogs. Hardy hasn’t met a dog he doesn’t like yet. He is very playful, and also somewhat perceptive. His foster sister doesn’t like to play and she told him that the first day he came, so Hardy has kept his distance with her. However Hardy plays with his foster brother regularly. At first he wasn’t sure how to play, but he caught on quickly and now the two boys would play all day if they could.

Hardy also likes people. He is a TINY bit shy at first, but not much, and he warms up to people very quickly. He loves getting treats and being petted. He’d be a cuddly lap dog if someone would let him, though he doesn’t usually get on the furniture unless invited.

Hardy loves to go for car rides and is good in the car. He likes to look out the window or take naps while he’s driven around. Hardy also loves toys of all shapes and sizes. He likes to play tug with rope toys and chase any toy or ball you throw.

One thing Hardy doesn’t like is his crate. Because he is a new dog in the house, Hardy has to stay in a crate when his foster mom is gone to work. Hardy has some anxiety in the crate and sometimes pants and barks. This is something his foster mom believes he can work through with some more training. Hardy sleeps through the night in his crate without any problems.

He is very perceptive to voice commands, and is the kind of dog that wants to please his owner. Hardy knows sit, down and stay. He also knows “get
off” which was used when he did jump on the furniture. Hardy is housebroken and will usually whine and pace back and forth (to the door if he has access to it) when he needs to go outside.

Hardy would be a great sport dog for someone interested in flyball or agility because he is so easily trainable, eager to please and just generally quick and sporty. However, Hardy would also make a good family dog. As long as he gets to go on walks, and chase a ball, Hardy will always be happy.

Mollie is the result of a double merle breeding, which has left her mostly blind. But her hearing is okay and except for occasionally bumping into things, you would never know the difference! Mollie is very laid back and lazy for her age. She prefers to just hang out and play occasionally. She loves to cuddle and insists on being a lap puppy. Danny and his brother Tony are beautiful pure bred Australian Shepherds. Unfortunately they were not bred by individuals with any knowledge of the issues related to “double merles”. As a result of this breeding BOTH PUPPIES ARE BLIND AND DEAF. They actually have underdeveloped eyes, which appears as if they don’t have eyes at all. They are also deaf, so they can not hear any commands, or sweet sounds.

This will make their training very difficult, but not impossible. These pups are VERY smart and will thrive on scent training. It was take tons of time and patience, but it can be done. If you would like to adopt these pups, you will have to do your research and understand the types of training involved and you will be asked about what you have learned.

These pups desereve a special home that will love them and socialize them like any other “normal” puppy. These pups still need discipline and structure and need to be taught how to behave. They still chew on things, steal your shoes, and eventually will steal your hearts. If you are interested in adoption these sweet pups please fill out an application. Fenced yard is required. Cookie Just After Her Injury, and doing GREAT!

Cookie came to ARPH over a year ago with her two children, Pepper and Angel. All three came to the rescue because their forever home was one of those casualties of the economy, all three are excellent examples of what a great Australian Shepherd is. Cookie had done well teaching her pack how to treat others, human kind and animal.

Cookie Was First To Be Santa's Elf

Tuesday March 8th, 2011, we all are poorer and all just a little less entertained by the loss of Cookie. Cookie was 15 years old, she had delivered many puppies in her life, and she was able to finish out her final years in the home of Lisa and Loren. Even though I was no longer an ARPH rep or with their organization, I made sure to stay in touch with Lisa and Loren to know just how my girl was doing. She was always a fighter in life and in the end, cancer took her from us.

Storm passed away on Monday after a hard battle, his family tried everything they could but he just couldn’t make it. Please send your prayers to his family, and know he is now awaiting their appearance at the bridge, helping all our Aussies come and feel welcome and wait with them for their families.
