ADOPTED

Mia (#0196) is a 6-8 month old red-tri female Australian Shepherd. Her vaccinations are up to date, she has been spayed and is on heartworm & flea/tick preventative. She currently weighs in at 28 pounds and could possibly get up to 35 pounds when she is fully grown. She is completely housebroken and will pace back and forth from where you are to the door to let you know she needs to go outside. She kennels very well and is able to go without accidents for 8+ hours if necessary.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Mia-large-300x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Mia-large.jpeg"]Protege 0196 Mia[/frame_center]

Mia has lots of energy and feeds off of good praise (and treats!). However, she is definitely a puppy still. If you are untidy, she is very “helpful” at picking things up. She has lots of toys to chew on and play with, but she will occasionally find your shoe or sock more interesting. For this reason, she is not yet reliable at being unattended for long periods of time.

She is very smart and picks things up pretty easily. She knows “sit”, “stay”, “lay down” and “hand”. She would much rather be on the couch or bed next to you and will jump on you when greeting, but is learning that “off” is not a bad thing. She will occasionally do some alarm barking so we are working on “no bark”. We had a hard time taking walks at first because she liked to pull but has responded very well to the Halti.

We have yet to meet a dog or person that she hasn’t liked, but she can be shy at first when around multiple dogs. She does okay off-leash and with recalls, but she becomes easily distracted when her nose hits the ground. She is also very fast when it comes to play time and would probably do best with a fenced in yard. She currently lives with two cats and shows no interest in them unless they are playing and she wants in on the action.

Here is a video of Mia playing with her foster sister:

Mia had distichia, or eyelashes that were in an abnormal location along the eyelids. She has had surgery to remove many of the eyelashes that were rubbing on her eyes and causing irritation. She has responded very well and has not let it slow her down; this should not be a problem long-term. Mia is currently being fostered in Cedar Rapids. If you might be interested in learning more about Mia, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

Sheila (#0195) is a 7 month old Aussie mix (we suspect Aussie x Sheltie). She currently weighs around 25 pounds and our best guess is that she will be around 30/35 pounds full grown. She is tan, white and has a little bit of black peppered in. Sheila is spayed, HW tested negative, up to date on vaccinations, and on flea/tick and heartworm preventatives. Her coat has a little bit of a wave to it, and is super soft to the touch!

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Sheila-large-266x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Sheila-large.jpeg"]Protege # 0195 Sheila[/frame_center]

Sheila is friendly and curious when she feels secure. She is more comfortable with women initially, but warms up to men as well. She likes to stay close to her people, and she follows us around the house as we go about our daily activites. Sheila would do best in a home without children under the age of 10. She is reactive to people’s arrivals, and her own arrival in a new environment. We are currently working on desensitizing and counter-conditioning with this issue, and she is making progress. Recently upon the arrival of her foster mom’s sister and her 8 year old son, she barked loudly at them. They gave her treats and greeted her, then walked on into the house and ignored her. Fifteen minutes later, Sheila was again going about business as usual, and visited both the sister who was in the kitchen, and the computer room where the nephew was on the computer, and she reached her nose under the arm of the chair to give him kisses on his hand as he played games.

Sheila walks well on a leash, but her current level of fear and reactiveness (frantic barking/rushing out to the end of the leash) to strangers and unfamiliar items would make leash walking about the neighborhood difficult. In this area she is also making great progress. Upon arrival at her foster home she couldn’t be in the yard when anyone was out and about in a four-house radius. Now she can watch the neighbors doing yard work and going about their business with her only reactions being noises in the back of her throat while she goes on with what she was initially doing before she noticed them. Sheila will require a fenced yard, both to protect her from bolting in fear, and for room for exercise until she able to handle leash walking without being reactive.

Sheila gets along fine with other dogs. She wants very much to play, but still is uncertain of how to go about playing with other dogs. She play bows and initiates some chase games, but isn’t quite sure where to go from there. Sheila goes with her foster mom several day a week to the doggy daycare facility where she works; she interacts with up to 14 other dogs of similar size in her play area, and this also gives her the opportunity to socialize/desensitize to being around other people, and to practice her arrivals/departures. She rides well in a car, and enjoys going places. There are two cats in Sheila’s foster home; Sheila likes playing with them, and they often initiate play with her, but for most cats she will be too much, so we recommend that she go to a home without cats.

Sheila is crate trained, and goes right into the crate when she is asked to kennel up. When leaving the house, she will initially bark when crated, but does quiet after 10 minutes or so. She is quiet when crated overnight in the bedroom; however if she is crated her while her foster family is home (for example, while they are eating) she will fuss for a while, as she wants to be wherever her people are. Sheila is very well housetrained, she has had no accidents since coming into foster care, and she will whine and pace at the door when she needs to go out to potty.

Sheila came to us with her lovey, which is a pink puppy named Pink Floyd. She LOVES Pink FLoyd. She sleeps in her crate with her head on him at night. If he gets left in the crate, she will sometimes scratch at the bedroom door, and when you open the door, she will run in to get him and bring him out into the living room. She never chews him up, but frequently carries him around with her. It’s absolutely adorable! She also enjoys chewing on Nylabones and Natural bones. She does not guard her toys from other dogs.

Sheila has completed a 7-week beginning obedience class prior to coming into rescue. She knows basic commands, is eager to please, and VERY intelligent.

Sheila will do best with a patient adopter who can provide reassurance, consistency, positive guidance, and a firm, structured routine, along with lots of love. These things lead her to a feeling of trust with you, and we have noted that Sheila’s reactiveness/fearfulness is decreased as she builds trust with the person she is with, and (in her mind) trusts them to keep her “safe.” When she feels like you have a handle on things, she doesn’t find it as necessary to react to the things around her. Her adoptive home needs to be prepared to continue working on desensitization and counter-conditioning for her fears so that she can continue the progress she is making. She is a charming, delightful and affectionate companion who will bond closely with her special people. She has wonderful potential and will thrive in the right setting.

Sheila is being fostered in Cedar Rapids. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application (www.protegerescue.org/) before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

ADOPTED

Introducing Rome (#0194). The shelter named him Rome, but we think Romeo may be more appropriate, because he is such an affectionate, loving dog! Rome was a stray taken in by a local shelter, who contacted us about getting Rome into Aussie rescue. Because Rome was a stray, we have no information on his past life, only our observations since he’s come into rescue. Rome is a handsome red merle male Aussie, approximately 4 years old. He is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, heartworm and lyme tested negative, and on heartworm/flea preventatives.

Protege #0194 Rome

Rome is currently being fostered at Camp Bow Wow in Hiawatha, where he interacts with the staff and up to 14 other dogs on a daily basis. Rome likes to play with the other dogs in his play area a little bit, but he would much prefer to spend his time getting hugs and being petted by anyone he meets. Rome is very outgoing, and thrives on attention. Wherever you go, Rome would like to go too…except for maybe in the car. Rome does not seem to have had many reasons to ride in a car before coming into rescue, and is very nervous about it. After several outings, he now jumps up into the van on his own, but once in motion he is very anxious and drools heavily. He would much prefer to go on walks than on car rides at this point! He does seem to be improving, and could potentially learn to tolerate car rides with positive reinforcement and desensitization. Rome keeps his cabin at camp clean, and has had no potty accidents indoors.

Rome is an easy going, loving dog who is ready for a family of his own.

Holly (#0193) is an adorable red-tri puppy with beautiful hazel eyes. She weighs all of 13 pounds, is about 4 months old, and is doing so well after a sad start in life. Little Holly was saved by a rescue group after they saw her exhibited at an exotic animal show in Iowa. This group then turned Holly over to Protege and we are very glad to have her in our care. Her skin was dry and flaky and her fur was course. She was full of worms and dehydrated. After being examined by our vet, it was determined that the condition of Holly’s coat was from lack of nutrition and her poor paws were splayed from spending too much time in a wire cage. Despite her rough start, Holly is a sweet, mild-mannered, funny girl who wants nothing more than to romp with her doggie companions and snuggle up next to humans for some quiet attention.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Holly-Large-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/Holly-Large.jpeg"]Protege #0193 Holly[/frame_center]

Holly’s feet are coming along nicely; in fact, they are very endearing….a little big for her petite body but maybe she’ll grow into them – and she is gaining muscle mass and much needed weight. She loves running around the yard, chases balls and toys, gets along great with dogs of all sizes and genders and LOVES kids. While she remains a bit cautious about new people, she warms up very quickly and prefers being touched on the bottom of her chin instead of being patted on top of her head. She is submissive and shares food, toys and love in a very busy household. She eats like a champ and has not had any accidents in our home. Despite her time in a wire cage, she welcomes a comfy crate and is not uncomfortable being in one for bedtime and while the humans are away. Holly can maintain a clean crate for up to 6 hours during the day and all night long. She doesn’t whimper unless she needs out to go potty.

Holly is one of the nicest, easiest fosters I’ve ever had in my home. She curls up in a little ball on the couch at night to get her loving from our 10 year old son and she gives kisses willingly. Holly’s sweet personality will win you over. Her forever home would likely include another canine companion to continue to improve her confidence and show her the ropes at her new home. She is gentle and kind to kids. She would do best with older kids who will respect her sweet demeanor and small size. She is ready to be spayed in a few weeks and will receive her rabies shot then as well. Holly is fostered in Marion, Iowa.

There are additional photos, including several “before” and “after” shots, and three cute videos of Holly at the Protege website for your viewing pleasure: http://protegerescue.org

Rally (#0191) is a beautiful blue merle Mini-Aussie, with one blue and one brown eye. He is about 7 months old, is neutered, and is up to date on all shots. He is a bit chubby at 16 pounds and needs to lose a few pounds to get to his ideal weight.

Rally is a little shy when meeting someone new, but give him a treat and you’ve got a friend for life. He gets along great with other dogs and is fine with cats. He is a little timid around children.

Rally is housebroken and we are working on basic training. He knows how to sit, lie down, spin and shake! He does wonderfully on car rides, mostly just lays down in the seat next to you. He is just a very easy-going dog. He loves to go on walks and will follow you anywhere. Well, except to the bathroom: since he got a bath, he is a little timid of it. But is starting to venture in.

Rally is a very sweet and loving dog. He loves attention and cuddling. Here is a little video of Rally showing off his sociable cuteness:

Meet Winnie (#0188)! She is a 4 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd who loves to fetch! She is very obedient and would make the perfect addition to an active home with kids. Winnie came to Protégé overweight; she continues to lose weight and since she loves to be active, this is going very well. At this writing, she was at 45 lbs., but she will be on the smaller side when she gets to her ideal weight.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large.jpeg"]Protege #0188 Winnie[/frame_center]

Winnie is crate trained and likes having her crate in new environments, however she does not need it, and has never had problems roaming her foster parents’ house when they are away.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large1.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Winnie-large1.jpeg"]Protege #0188 Winnie[/frame_center]

While Winnie loves children and people. Though she tended to growl at other dogs when she first came into the program, Winnie has been doing very well learning to get along. She is great with the neighbor dog, and now is even enjoying trips to the dog park! A game of fetch is best when shared with another dog you can race! She’d probably still prefer to be the only dog in the home, but if you socialize with other dogs and their famlies, Winnie can be a good choice.

Though sShe growled at her foster parents’ cats for the first couple days, after working with her she now ignores them, or sniffs curiously.

Winnie knows many tricks, and is always eager to learn more. Currently she knows come, sit, shake, lay-down, stay/wait, “go get it” (can be applied to a variety of things), “give it to me,” “Bring it closer,” “go find it,” “kennel up,” “go potty” and give kisses to name a few. She is awesome at catching a ball — we counted 84 times in a row with no misses on day! Winnie loves about any sort of ball toy and will come with some of her most special, if well-worn, ones.

Winnie is excellent off-leash and stays close. When playing in the field near their home her foster parents can tell her to go home and she goes to the door. They can also tell her to leave her ball outside and she puts it away outside.

As you can see from her video, Winnie really wants to get adopted! Winnie is up-to-date on her vaccinations and is ready to go to her forever home. Willie will add a ton of fun to your family. She is being fostered in Iowa City. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

ADOPTED

Hello! My name is Stanley. I am an Aussie mix and I will be 3 years old on May 4th. My human parents adopted me when I was just a puppy, but now I have a human brother too and it has been hard for them to give everyone the attention they need.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Stanley-Large-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Stanley-Large.jpeg"]Stanley[/frame_center]

Let me tell you about myself. I am about 50 pounds, my coat is red merle, and one of my eyes is blue. I am a medium energy dog, and I am starting to calm down a little bit as my puppy years are ending. I get along great with my human brother who is 18 months. I also have a dog brother that I get along with really well (a boxer). My favorite game is Frisbee, but any kind of fetch will do. I also love walks and runs, there is even a park here that I sometimes get to go hiking through off-leash. I never want to get too far away from my parents and I always come back whenever they call. I can get a little bit of cabin fever if I go too long without playing, so it is important that we have time to do that. When it is time to relax, I am always happy lying close by my parents.

I would love to come be a part of your family and I think I would make quite a nice addition as long as we have time to play together. I am living in Cedar Falls.

Contact Brian at 319-239-5534 or by email at brianbottke@gmail.com if you might like to know more about Stanley.

Roscoe (#0189) is a red tri Australian Shepherd who is almost a year old. He is up to date on all of his shots and is neutered. Roscoe was surrendered to a Shelter by his family because he was too active. He is a very lovable dog with a bright and funny personality. Roscoe loves playing with toys, people and other dogs. He is great at fetching balls or toys and loves playing tug. His foster mom is working on a release word for Roscoe so he knows when to let go of the tug. He is also learning to watch out for hands while he is tugging, because sometimes in his excited state Roscoe forgets where the tug ends and the hands start! Roscoe knows sit, down and come. He is also crate trained and housebroken. When Roscoe needs to go outside he will go to the door and whine.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Roscoe-large-400x251.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/04/Roscoe-large.jpeg"]Roscoe (#0189)[/frame_center]

Roscoe is an energetic dog, but not overly active for his age or breed. He would do best in a home where he could go on daily walks, visit the dog park, play with other dogs or fetch balls in a backyard. Roscoe would be an excellent flyball, agility or frisbee dog. He has a high endurance level, learns very quickly, is toy and food motivated, and wants to please the humans in his life. After a walk or a run outside, Roscoe is perfectly content to come inside and nap on a dog
bed while his foster mom works around the house. Roscoe is such a likable dog he’s even convinced his foster sister, who is stubborn about who she plays with or even associates with, to be his good friend. He is smart with other dogs and knows when to be submissive.

Roscoe LOVES all people, attention and snuggling. He would be in seventh heaven if he could be someone’s lap dog; however, at Roscoe’s foster home he is not allowed on the furniture and he usually respects this rule. When Roscoe first came to his foster home he jumped on all the furniture, but learned via a squirt bottle (which is VERY affective with him for training some things) that getting on couches and beds was naughty. Sometimes when Roscoe is really excited playing with his fosters siblings he jumps on the couch, but he always listens right away when he’s told “get down.” When Roscoe meets new people he often jumps or puts his front paws on them because he is so happy to see them. His foster mom is working on teaching him to sit to be petted.

Roscoe has not chewed on anything inappropriate in his foster home because there are plenty of toys available for him to choose from. Because he loves training time, attention and pleasing people, it is clear that Roscoe can become the perfect dog for an active family.

Here are a couple of short videos of Roscoe in action:

Breezy is a 36 pound red tri female about 2 years old. She is completely housebroken but is crated during the day while her foster parents are at work. She has the run of the house when they are home and at night. She gets along wonderfully with her foster siblings: an eight year old male Flat Coat/Gordon Setter mix, a 5 year old female Aussie and a 4 year old male Main Coon mix cat.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/101_1610-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/101_1610.jpg"]NS 0726 Breezy[/frame_center]

Breezy is a very high energy dog and loves lots of activity like long walks and will play fetch until she drops. Her absolute favorite toy is a tennis ball. She is willing to play anytime anywhere but she also understands when play time is over and will settle down very quickly. Her foster mom has been working with her in basic agility, fly ball and rally obedience to keep her mentally and physically challenged. She is smart, very treat motivated and willing to learn anything you take the time to teach her. Breezy has even learned to jog on the treadmill.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/100_1640-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/100_1640.jpg"]NS 0726 Breezy[/frame_center]

She has perfect house manners and other than following you like a shadow, you would never know she was there. Breezy walks well on a leash and loves to ride in the car. She willingly jumps in to go where ever you are going. She is not food, toy or crate possessive. She knows all her basic commands, sit, stay, down, come, shake, leave it and wait. Outside the home Breezy has never met a stranger; she accepts people and animals alike. Inside the home, her foster family is working on her trust issues with men.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Breezy-4-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Breezy-4.jpg"]NS 0726 Breezy[/frame_center]

While she likes her foster dad, she likes him best seated or lying on the floor as standing intimidates her a bit. Because of her lack of confidence with men Breezy would be best suited to go to a home with previous dog experience and no small children, as she may become over-protective of the children. She could also benefit from an established dog in the home to continue to learn from. She is a very happy girl and a lot of fun.

Breezy is located in Ingleside Illinois. If you have room in your heart and home for this cutie please complete an application at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue today. Reference NS 0726.

Please meet pretty Stella (Protege #0185). Stella is a sweet red merle spayed female whose farmer owner called the shelter promising to shoot her if they did not pick her up. Go figure. Hard to imagine any reason in the world for that kind of stupidity. Anyway, the shelter did, and then contacted our group to take Stella in and find her a new home.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella3.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella3.jpeg"]Protege #0185 Stella[/frame_center]

You will love this girl: she is about one year old, around 35 lbs, has one brown and one blue eye, is completely housebroken, very flexible about new situations: enjoys playing with dogs, meeting dogs, meeting all people (especially if they will love her up and give her belly rubs), and is great with cats. She is good riding in the car and waits patiently. Stella is crate trained and goes in happily for a treat; however, she is completely dependable if left uncrated. Despite that she is quite young, she does not get into trouble. She enjoys playing with toys and so far only chews on appropriate stuff. She will chase a ball a little for pure fun, but probably isn’t going to be an intense fetch dog. Generally, she’ll only get on furniture when invited, though she’s regularly invited in her foster home.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella2.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella2.jpeg"]Protege #0185 Stella[/frame_center]

Stella is ready to be your perfect pet dog and companion and will love you without question. As you can see from her videos, she is full of fun and young dog energy, but she is very manageable and settles well when inside. She likes to jump up into the bay window at her foster home to look out, or up into your bed, and when you get home from work she will be all wiggles and squirms in her joy to see you.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella1.jpeg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Stella1.jpeg"]Protege #0185 Stella[/frame_center]

Stella is an enthusiastic partner and learner: she enjoys walks and does okay on leash, though pulls a bit more than she should; she is not hard to contain, though. She is learning some easy tricks using the clicker and now does sit and down. She has a lovely recall because she’d really rather be with you than doing anything else, and she loves doing things for treats. Stella rarely barks.

Stella is up-to-date on her vaccinations and is ready to go to her forever home. You will not regret making Stella a part of your family! Apply today! She is being fostered in Marion.

Hardy (Protege #0187) is a beautiful blue merle boy with copper trim who is about 1-1/2 years old. He is up to date on all of his shots and will be neutered within the week.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Hardy-large-400x239.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/Hardy-large.jpeg"]Hardy (Protege #0187)[/frame_center]

Hardy is a smaller male Aussie, weighing in at about 30 lbs. He came from a home that could no longer keep him, and now needs someone who can take him and love him forever. He is a happy boy, with good spirits who enjoys people and dogs. Hardy hasn’t met a dog he doesn’t like yet. He is very playful, and also somewhat perceptive. His foster sister doesn’t like to play and she told him that the first day he came, so Hardy has kept his distance with her. However Hardy plays with his foster brother regularly. At first he wasn’t sure how to play, but he caught on quickly and now the two boys would play all day if they could.

Hardy also likes people. He is a TINY bit shy at first, but not much, and he warms up to people very quickly. He loves getting treats and being petted. He’d be a cuddly lap dog if someone would let him, though he doesn’t usually get on the furniture unless invited.

Hardy loves to go for car rides and is good in the car. He likes to look out the window or take naps while he’s driven around. Hardy also loves toys of all shapes and sizes. He likes to play tug with rope toys and chase any toy or ball you throw.

One thing Hardy doesn’t like is his crate. Because he is a new dog in the house, Hardy has to stay in a crate when his foster mom is gone to work. Hardy has some anxiety in the crate and sometimes pants and barks. This is something his foster mom believes he can work through with some more training. Hardy sleeps through the night in his crate without any problems.

He is very perceptive to voice commands, and is the kind of dog that wants to please his owner. Hardy knows sit, down and stay. He also knows “get
off” which was used when he did jump on the furniture. Hardy is housebroken and will usually whine and pace back and forth (to the door if he has access to it) when he needs to go outside.

Hardy would be a great sport dog for someone interested in flyball or agility because he is so easily trainable, eager to please and just generally quick and sporty. However, Hardy would also make a good family dog. As long as he gets to go on walks, and chase a ball, Hardy will always be happy.

He is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.
Trip had a rough start to his young life, but was rescued by a neighbor, and has now come into foster care until he finds his forever home. Trip is a little shy and quiet in new situations, but quickly comes out of his shell and is all puppy. He is very people-oriented, and usually wants to be wherever you happen to be, and he loves to cuddle. In his foster home he gets along well with the four resident dogs, and wants to play with the two resident cats, who aren’t so keen to play with him. Trip needs lots of redirection at this point in his young life to be respectful of the cats. He does not show any inclination to hurt them, but really wants to get them to play with him.

Trip loves having other dogs around to play with him. He is working on housetraining and crate training, and is making great progress. He currently is able to go all night without any middle of the night trips outside. Trip fusses in the crate if you are nearby, but once you leave the house, he is quiet in his crate. He wasn’t sure what a leash was when he arrived into rescue, and so he is working on leash walking. Trip is a typical puppy with lots of energy, and will need to go to a home where his new family has the time to devote to exercising him and to teaching him the manners he will need to become a wonderful adult companion.

I am missing my left eye as it never developed as a pup, but that doesn’t stop me! I love to play ball and play with kids. I love my human kid who is 7 years old, I’d go everywhere with him if I could. If you let me I’ll sleep on the couch and even on your bed with you. I love to run around the yard, and just run, but when I want inside I come and sit by the door for you to let me in.

I am little protective of my crate and my food when other dogs are around but will allow them to be near me once I’m corrected. I’d do best if I could be your only dog but I do get along with other dogs. I love playing ball and playing tug of war. I’m housebroken, and when I need to go outside I’ll tell you. I do bark when people come to the door. I know commands like, sit, stay, leave it, watch me, let’s go, box, and come. I’m up to date on my shots and am in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

Meet Dex (#0186)! Dex was recently returned to our program, which makes us all very sad as he is such a great, fun, and personable boy and deserves his perfect forever home.

He is a 1 year old, red-tri neutered male Australian Shepherd who loves to play. He has a lot of energy and is very intelligent. As a puppy he was abused and suffered a broken femur on his back left leg that was never corrected. Because of this it healed slightly shorter than his other three legs and during prolonged/intense exercise he tends to pick it up and run like a three-legged dog. The vet says he is not in pain and Dex seems to agree, it doesn’t slow him down one bit. His leg is not sensitive to touch either so he and his foster parents tend to forget it’s even an “issue.”

Dex

Dex has been in several different homes throughout his short life and really just wants to find his forever home. He enjoys watching T.V., going on walks, running in the yard, fetch, and learning/performing tricks; of which he knows sit, stay, come, shake, lay down, up (stand), get up/get off (furniture), turn around, speak, go potty. Here is a little video of one of Dex’s tricks — he learns so fast!

We call this one “Dex Knows English:”

Since he is housebroken, all you need to do is ask him if he has to go, if not he ignores you, if so he whines and gets antsy. Because Dex doesn’t always lift his back leg to urinate, from time to time he gets a little dribble on his front leg (not unusual for a male dog – but we mention it because this was one of the reasons his most recent home returned him). We just use baby wipes real quick and it’s not a problem.

Dex

At night Dex sleeps on his foster parents’ bed, the floor right near the bed, or out on the couch. However, because he has been bounced around so much in his short life, he has some separation anxiety, so when left alone he needs to be crated. He doesn’t mind his crate (it’s his safe place) and doesn’t usually make any fuss. He gets along great with children and cats if they are willing to play with him.

Dex is up-to-date on all his vaccinations and is on flea/tick and heartworm preventative. He’s is a super happy boy and wants more than anything a family to call his own who will keep him active and teach him new things forever and ever.

Dex is being fostered in Iowa City. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Let me introduce myself. My name is Diesel (Protege #0183) and I am almost 1-1/2 years old. I am a medium energy, neutered blue merle Australian Shepherd. My sister and I came into Protege after a sad time: my human mom died of cancer and my dad couldn’t keep us any longer.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Diesel-large2-391x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Diesel-large2.jpeg"]Diesel (Protege #0183)[/frame_center]

I am about 64 pounds of loving. My foster mom says that I need to lose a few pounds, though, and we are working on that. I am a happy-go-lucky guy and am what you would call a velcro dog. I will either be right by your side or within eye’s reach. I love my people and don’t want them to be too far away from me. I would really enjoy snuggling up next to you on the sofa if you’ll let me, but will settle for lying on the floor next to your feet. At night I would also love to snuggle up in bed next to you and I will be really glad to help keep you warm! If you are a person who works out at home, I will be right by your side like a sideline cheerleader throughout your routine. My favorite part is if you are on the floor, so that I can try to sneak in an occasional kiss.

When I first came to the rescue, my foster mom had to push and shove me into the crate. I really didn’t want to go in there; but after a couple of days of that, I decided to make life easier on both of us, so now I will go right into the crate when she asks me. I am completely housebroken. I am only crated when my foster mom is gone for long periods of time. I know the commands sit and shake and am learning down.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Diesel-large3-400x299.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Diesel-large3.jpeg"]Diesel (Protege #0183)[/frame_center]

I love meeting people. My foster mom laughs at me because my butt wiggles and my little tail wags like crazy when I see people. We went to Petco recently, and I loved seeing all the people. I enjoy playing with my foster brother. I would prefer to wrestle with him but he doesn’t like to do that, so we settle for playing tug. I love to run and play in the snow and run along the fence line with the neighbor dogs. I do get along well with other dogs. I will bark at them but I’m just saying hi and talking to them.

My foster mom laughs at me when she sees me watching TV. Yes it is true, I do like to watch a little bit of TV, especially when there are animals on there. Sometimes I’ll stand up in front of the TV to watch it and when the animals leave the screen I look behind the TV to see if they went back there. I haven’t found them yet.

To give you an idea of what great dogs my sister Harley and I are, the foster family who was keeping sis, adopted her after just a few days! They knew an awesome dog when they saw one; I am just as cool as she is!

I am up to date on my shots, and currently on heartworm and flea/tick preventatives. I am being fostered near Iowa City, Iowa. If you might be interested in learning more about me, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

Meet Winnie (Protege #0188)! She is a 4 year old blue merle Australian Shepherd who loves to fetch! She is very obedient and would make the perfect addition to an active home with kids. Winnie came to Protégé overweight, and while she has lost about 5 lbs., she needs to lose a few more; she currently weighs about 45 lbs., so she will be on the smaller side when she gets to her ideal weight.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Winnie-large-394x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Winnie-large.jpeg"](Protege #0188) Winnie[/frame_center]

Winnie is crate trained and likes having her crate in new environments, however she does not need it, and has never had problems roaming her foster parents’ house when they are away.

While Winnie loves children and people, she tends to growl at other dogs. She hasn’t been aggressive at all towards any neighboring dogs but would prefer to be in a one-dog home. She growled at her foster parents’ cats for the first couple days but after working with her she now ignores them, or sniffs curiously.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Winnie-large1-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/02/Winnie-large1.jpeg"](Protege #0188) Winnie[/frame_center]

Winnie is excellent off-leash and stays close. When playing in the field near their home her foster parents can tell her to go home and she goes to the door. They can also tell her to leave her ball outside and she puts it away outside.

Winnie really wants to get adopted! Winnie is up-to-date on her vaccinations and is ready to go to her forever home. Willie will add a ton of fun to your family. She is being fostered in Iowa City, Iowa. If you might be interested in learning more about this dog, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Meet Iroh (#0180), a 7 year old, neutered red merle Australian Shepherd. Iroh came to Protégé after his owner became ill and was no longer able to care for him. He is a very well-behaved dog and loves any form of affection. He is very dignified though, and isn’t in your face about it.

For Iroh, there are few things a dog treat and belly rub can’t fix. He is completely housebroken, and while he really does not enjoy being in a crate, will go into it and stay quiet after a few minutes. However, at his foster home he is allowed to wander around loose and there haven’t been any problems. Iroh knows how to sit, stay, and come on command and is great off-leash. He also conveniently answers to the name/word “dog.”

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Iroh-large-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/Iroh-large.jpeg"]Iroh (Protege #0180)[/frame_center]

Iroh gets along great with other dogs and ignores cats completely. Iroh LOVES one-on-one time with people. He does need to have some dental work done but he doesn’t let it bother him. Iroh exhibits alarm barking but is easily quieted and is never aggressive.

When coming home, Iroh’s foster parents are greeted with great excitement and affection. His exhilaration and enthusiasm has quickly become something they look forward to. While his energy and excitement are fun, they are not over-the-top and he quickly settles down, resting his head on their laps or lying at their feet.

At night Iroh keeps an eye on the house by laying in different areas (i.e. by one door, then on his pillow in the bedroom, then the living room). He loves to cuddle on the couch or in bed if you’ll let him, but is too polite to assume you want him all over your furniture. Wow, what a smart dog!

Iroh has the most stunning eyes. Each eye is two different colors! His left eye is bright blue on bottom and brown on top, while his right eye is brown on bottom and bright blue on top.

If you might be interested in learning more about Iroh, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.

Introducing Scooby (Protege #0177)! Scooby is a 3 year old red merle male Aussie! He has recently been neutered, is up to date on all vaccinations, has been heartworm tested and is on preventatives. He is small in height, but has a few extra pounds that he could stand to lose. He currently weighs in at 34 pounds, but would probably be best at 30 pounds.

Scooby is very affectionate and super cute, and he is definitely a velcro Aussie who wants nothing more in life than to be right where his people are. He gets along well with all other dogs, and is currently being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Camp Bow Wow where he interacts with staff and up to 14 other dogs on a daily basis.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scooby-large-376x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Scooby-large.jpeg"]Scooby (Protege #0177)[/frame_center]

Scooby has done well with everyone he meets. He is a bit nervous upon first meeting, but is quite quick to warm up to new people after introductions. He shows interest in cats, and will follow them around if the cats are playing, but Scooby has been respectful of them.

Scooby was originally raised in a Spanish-speaking household. We have been working on learning what Scooby’s commands were in Spanish, and we are slowly trying to help him to associate them with the matching English commands. He is very eager to please, and if he understands what you are asking for he responds very well.

Scooby is completely housetrained, and has not had any accidents in the house or in his kennel at camp. He initially fusses, but quiets quickly when you leave the area, or when you tell him to be quiet.

The shelter staff reported that when Scooby was dropped off at the shelter there was a toddler with them, who was hugging and kissing Scooby, and Scooby was very tolerant of this. We have not yet tested him with small children, but based on this account I would think that he will probably do fine with kids.

If you are looking for a cute, smaller-sized Aussie who has a big heart to love his new family, Scooby would love to become a forever part of your family! If you might be interested in learning more about Scooby, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com.

We are pleased to introduce handsome Quinn (Protege #0178)! Quinn is a neutered male blue merle Australian Shepherd with tons of personality who is eager to please! He is about 1-1/2 years old and very happy to be as active as you’d like. Quinn has beautiful markings; we especially like the dark merle spot on his left hind end (see photo).

Quinn loves to play with other dogs and is very gentle. He is not at all possessive about food; in fact, when his foster brother and sister are licking out human bowls, he just stands back and watches. Quinn is having a lot of fun with clicker training, and is enthusiastically learning come, sit, down, and rollover. When he’s out in the backyard, he comes right away to the door when called. He loves to go for car rides.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Quinn-large-300x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Quinn-large.jpeg"]Quinn (Protege #0178)[/frame_center]

Quinn is completely housebroken and is cratetrained. He goes right into a crate, with or without a treat, and stays quietly. If he knows you are about, he may whine, but settles quickly when told. Though he loves to play and has a lot of energy, he also settles down nicely in the house, and lies quietly nearby while you work.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Qinn-large2-400x279.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Qinn-large2.jpeg"]Quinn (Protege #0178)[/frame_center]

Quinn has a sporty build and would be a good candidate for additional training in obedience or a dog sport such as agility or flyball. He is overly excited when introduced to new situations, but we think the more socializing he gets, the less of a problem this will be. As he becomes more accustomed to and attached to his foster mom, he is starting to greet her by jumping up and putting his paws on her chest. He is very gentle about this and is doing it out of happiness, but of course it is a bad habit, and we are discouraging it. As a rule, he is not getting on furniture without being invited, though he has taken to jumping up into the bay window to look out (and how handsome he is sitting in the window!).

Quinn’s learned how to do stairs since he’s been in foster care, and now loves to run up and down. He is also beginning to carry stuffed toys around and play with them a bit; so far, he has not been destructive. He loves to enjoy a nice bone with the other dogs in the evening.

Quinn is up to date on all vaccinations, on heartworm and flea & tick preventative, and is ready to go to his forever home immediately. He is just looking for someone to be his best friend forever, and we’re sure he will do whatever you ask of him with unbounded happiness and enthusiasm. He is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Here is a video of Quinn playing with his foster brother:

[frame_left src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-8-150x150.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-8.jpg"]NS 0635 Bani (Bailey)[/frame_left]Meet Bani (Bailey) who is a 50 pound Red Tri purebred Australian Shepherd who even graduated and has all his papers. Bani came to us because he was said to be nipping, what we found is he is full of energy and needs that channeled, or he probably would get in trouble. If you are able to walk him, throw some tennis balls and frisbees, and maybe even have another Aussie around he will be that perfect gentleman we are seeing at this time. Many Aussies are this way, they need to have lots of energy burnt off or they will act up.

Bani loves to go for walks and is a real trooper when he is on leash. He is a little timid in the car, preferring to lay still in the back seat, no outbursts or jumping around. With more exposure to the car rides he would probably start to enjoy them more. He will crate very well and sleeps in his crate excellently. While he shows no food aggression issues, he actually ate right next to his new foster brother the first night, he did try to steal his foster brother’s treat and that is a no-no.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-7-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-7.jpg"]NS 0635 Bani (Bailey) Red Tri Australian Shepherd[/frame_center]

Bani has been to doggie daycare (“dog whisperer”) and knows his sit and down, and we are working on stay. He loves to play with his foster brother Royce, Royce is a tough and tumble player and Bani kept right up with him and they played for hours, so long that Bani was worn out and slept for hours, oblivious to the world (a true worn out Aussie). He also loves tennis balls. He is currently stalking the cat, but in Bani’s defense, the cat likes to pick on the dogs in the home.

Bani seems to prefer women and will instantly bond with the female in the home, becoming the true velcro dog. He will bark at men but not be aggressive. While in foster care we will work on his acceptance of men and the male gender. Bani does have the typical Aussie reserve and will bark at strangers but will stand down if given the command.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-6-400x300.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Bani-6.jpg"]NS 0635 Bani (Bailey) Red Tri Australian Shepherd[/frame_center]

If you are interested in Bani and would like to get this boy into your home (we would suggest he have another 4 legged mate to play with and best to not have cats) then complete an application today at New Spirit 4 Aussie Rescue. Reference NS 0635

Mork (Protege #0171) is a 5 year old black-tri male Australian Shepherd. He was turned in by his owner due to the owner’s medical problems. He’s neutered and very well-mannered. Mork spent most of his 5 years locked up in his crate, so new surroundings make him a little timid. He likes to have his crate as an option for someplace to hide and feel safe. He is a fantastic dog to play fetch with (returns it every time), and he has just started agility training!

Mork LOVES other dogs. He goes to the dog parks a couple of times a week with his foster parents and loves running around with the other dogs and playing fetch. Mork’s foster parents have 2 cats that Mork gets along with fine (he’s submissive to them, so just ignores them or goes around them leaving plenty of space). Because of his slightly more timid nature, young children scare Mork at first. It might be best if he were placed in a home with older children.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Mork-large-383x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/12/Mork-large.jpeg"]Mork (Protege #0171)[/frame_center]

When outside Mork has limitless energy, but inside he calms down and wants nothing more than to lay at your feet. The only time Mork will jump onto a bed or couch is if he is invited.

Mork is mostly a quite boy; the only times he has barked have been alarm barking ( i.e., if walking at night and someone approaches he will bark quietly or growl, or if no one is home and you walk up and shake the door handle he will bark through the door).

When left alone Mork can be crated or not. He is very well housetrained and has neither marked his territory nor had an accident in the house. Mork also knows how to: sit, stay, come, lay down, shake, fetch, stand up on hind legs and catch a ball in the air.

Meet Faythe and her sister Handlee, she took a nice long road trip from North Platte Nebraska. She is an 8-10 week old blue merle Australian Shepherd who is deaf. Sadly both were found as strays along the side of a highway. Both are in their foster home and checked out for all the things a regular puppy needs, and they are doing great! They play all the time and get along well with other dogs, kids of all sizes and the family cat. Even the Guinea Pig is safe when they are around.

Meet one of the smartest Aussies we know, Qorban (aka Quincy ME) is coming to Illinois after he was adopted at the young age of 9 months old, and from there he went to earn the honors of being a therapy dog, he was top in his class. Qorban got into some trouble though, you see he was left to his onw mischief and started to chase the cattle on the farm down the road, surprise, surprise, surprise! So we are going to have to say he can’t be in a home that has any cows, we know this is a tough one for many of you, but that is what we decided.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Quincy-Nebraska-3-323x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Quincy-Nebraska-3.jpg"]NS 0811 Qorban (Quincy)[/frame_center]

Qorban is around 50 pounds, he is now 3 years old and he is deaf, but he knows all his commands, and is house-trained and crate trained. Qorban rides great in a car, though he will tell you from time to time where to go, so we suggest he rife in the backseat. Qorban also walks great on a leash. Since Qorban was therapy certified, he would probably excel back in that role again.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Quincy-Nebraska-1-315x400.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Quincy-Nebraska-1.jpg"]NS 0811 Qorban (Quincy)[/frame_center]

Qorban gets along great with other dogs, he is up to date on all his shots and he is neutered. The rescue we received him from had him with 6 other males and he never caused a fight or displayed any aggression. He is what we call a perfect dog, minus the hearing issue, but he makes up for it with lots of love and kisses.

Meet someone that just doesn’t know he is considered a special needs boy. Aenon (Ace for short) is one happy camper. He loves to play and play and play and play and play, did I mention he loves to play? Ace is in a home with 2 other adult dogs and 2 other lethal white puppies (10 wks old) and they all love life.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-1-400x384.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-1.jpg"]NS 0633 Aenon (Ace)[/frame_center]

Aenon (Ace) is around 20 pounds at the moment, but we expect him once he is past that lanky puppy phase to be around 45-50 pounds all grown up. He will need to be neutered once he is old enough, but don’t worry, we will still let him find a forever home, and we will even cover his vetting (thru one of our approve vet offices) and he will need his rabies shot at 6 months old as well, again we will cover that expense.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-4-400x265.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-4.jpg"]NS 0633 Aenon (Ace)[/frame_center]

Ace is working on his potty rules and doing well, he will use his crate (he sleeps through the night) and is working on his leash manners. He loves the car as well. Since Ace is a lethal white (the result of a Merle to Merle breeding) he is deaf, but he is also working on his hand signals, he already knows sit and down, and is currently in his puppy classes with his other foster sisters to learn even more commands.

[frame_center src="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-5-400x266.jpg" href="http://www.aussierescueil.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/Aenion-Ace-5.jpg"]NS 0633 Aenon (Ace)[/frame_center]

Meet Toby (#0167)! Toby is a handsome 6 year old neutered blue merle male Aussie with cute little prick ears. He was turned into the rescue by his owner who is moving and is unable to take him.

Toby was overweight when he came into our program. He weighed 41 pounds and now weighs about 34 pounds. He should weigh somewhere between 25-30 pounds. He is on a strict diet and is getting a lot of exercise which he is ok with.

Toby LOVES to play fetch. The first thing that he does when he goes outside is pick up a tennis ball, because he is ready to play! He will also catch the ball. Toby knows various commands like sit, stay, come, wait, and roll over, as well as paw and other paw (shake). You can see from his videos that he can catch the ball and has a pretty cute roll over. All of the tennis balls that were located inside Toby’s foster home have been put away, since he would really like to play ball in the house as well.

Toby (#0167)

Toby enjoys being outside. For the most part he is quiet outside unless a stranger walks by; he’ll bark at them but will stop when he knows it is ok. He doesn’t even bark at the neighbor dogs. They’ll bark at him and he looks at them like “what is your problem?” Thankfully he is not a digger outside either.

Toby (#0167)

When his foster mom is away from home Toby is crated. He’ll go in if led into the crate, but would rather not go in there. He is quiet in the crate unless he can hear you, and then he’ll bark. If you give him a firm “Quiet!” he’ll quiet down. He was not crated in his original home and is fine left out.

Toby gets along with other dogs but mostly wants to play ball and doesn’t really pay attention to other dogs very much. He enjoys going for walks and is good on-leash. He recently walked in the Paws for a Cause dog walk in Iowa city and did really well with so many people and other dogs at the event. He would sniff a few of the dogs, but was mostly interested in the humans, as he really wanted to be petted.

Though Toby is really focused on playing ball when he is outside (if there are balls available), when he is inside he settles down and will lie on the floor next to you. He is a pretty easy going little guy, very sweet and will give light kisses on occasion. We would recommend that balls are not available to Toby all the time, it’s probably better if his humans control when it is ball play time — and tennis balls are very abrasive on dogs’ teeth if they chew on them a lot.

Here are a couple of short videos of Toby:

We are pleased to introduce Musashi (Protege #0168). Musashi is called Muus (pronounced Moose) for short, and his name means Warrior Spirit in Japanese. The name’s not necessarily appropriate, as Muus isn’t all that much of a warrior — but the moose part fits, for now at least.

Muus was turned into rescue by his owner, who must move and is unable to take him. He is an extremely handsome neutered 4-year-old blue merle male Aussie with very striking markings.

Muus is extremely overweight; when he came into our program, he weighed 93 lbs. and his proper weight is around 55-60 lbs., so he is on a strict diet and we’re making sure he gets plenty of exercise. He also had an extremely long and not very well-tended coat (as you can see in the first pic above), and because of the summer heat and his weight, he suffered a good deal with the coat and matting, so he got a special trip to the groomers — and we were astonished to see the great beauty underneath all that hair! His coat is so pretty and soft, and he loves so much to be petted and scratched, he feels just like a Gund Teddy Bear.

Musashi Before Weight-loss

Muus is a nearly perfect dog and he is going to make someone an awesome friend and companion. He is happy to be active and enjoys walks (needs some work with his leash manners), will chase tennis balls, and likes to tug. He really likes to go up and down the stairs, so we are working on a bit of fetch that way as part of his exercise routine. Here are a couple of short videos of Muus pre-haircut:

Muus has very good food manners, he doesn’t complain a bit about getting lots less than he is used to. He waits patiently to be served and isn’t defensive about his food. He takes treats gently. Muus has never spent time in a crate in his previous life, but goes in willingly and has no problem being crated while his foster mom is at work. He is also completely fine uncrated and left loose in the house. He loves going for car rides and sits quietly in the back looking out the window — sticking his head out if it’s open, of course! He doesn’t often get on the furniture, though does get on the couch, and we think perhaps as he loses weight and can jump up more easily, he’ll enjoy these soft spots if he’s allowed to be there. He does like to snuggle next to his foster mom on the couch and rest his head on her legs — he will be a GREAT dog to have in the winter!

Musashi After Weight-loss

Muus has a cheerful attitude and is beginning to enjoy playing with some of the toys around the house. He comes when called and knows sit; as with most Aussies, he wants to be where his people are. Muus is completely housebroken and is generally a quiet guy.

The one problem Muus has so far is that he does not greet new dogs well. Though he has settled in with his foster brother and sister okay, he does get into occasional tiffs with them, so we are recommending that he go to a home where he’ll be the only dog. He does better interacting with another dog who isn’t interested in playing — his preference is to have dogs leave him alone. We think he is insecure and undersocialized from a life where he didn’t ever meet other dogs, and it is a difficult adjustment for him.

Muus is a total human love-bug, though. He loves all people and is friendly and fun. He hasn’t met many kids since he’s been with us, though we don’t think children would be a problem.

We would prefer that Muus go to a family that will be dedicated to keeping him active and continuing his diet; he will be much happier and healthier when he gets down to his ideal weight.

Muus is current on all vaccinations and is ready for his forever home. He is being fostered in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. If you might be interested in learning more about Muus, please email Jayne at mcjayne@yahoo.com. While we welcome your questions about this dog, all adopters are required to complete a Protege Adoption Application before being considered to adopt a Protege dog; our adoption fee is $200.
